Amd FX 9590 stability tips

I am having stability issues with this processor (I know. It's power hungry, hot and old) however I experience blue screening after waking the computer from sleep mode. That's the only problem I have with the processor. I am running the chip with an ASUS M5A99FX PRO R2.0 and 24 GB of gskill DDR3 ram. This is my first build so I'm not 100% sure my bois settings are perfect and if needed I can provide some screenshots

***UPDATE FOR INFORMATION***

the PC does wake up, then starts to bog down in speed, then simple tasks like opening task manager or moving the mouse become laggy or unresponsive. Then the PC finally blue screens so hard windows is unable to collect the information to create a dump file. the only reason I know this is a BIOS or processor based issue is that I have already reinstalled Windows to different drives using different install disks. my temps prior to sleep are okay however keeping temps under control in this processor are a little difficult  (as I write this it wavers between 20°C and 34°C respectively as the CPU gains a little less or more load per core. in the instance its somehow a power issue I am currently using a rosewill 80 plus gold 750W power supply

I am totally not saying this is what it is, but a while back I had (sounds like) a very similar issue. Mine turned out to be a GPU issue. But as you didnt state if you even had a GPU i am totally not sure and I am sure someone will answer better than I. Just thought I'd throw this out there!

my current GPU is a GTX 1050, the AMD FX 9590 does not have an integrated GPU so with this processor specifically, you have to have one. @boxxykiller 

this also does have the latest graphic drivers

Ya wasnt going to look up info about the specific chip because honestly I am not sure my fix is THE FIX. But if you have the time and can, I would roll back the drivers, and do a complete uninstall with DDU found HERE in safe mode. Might not be the fix, but worth a shot.

@boxxykiller I never really suspected this to be a GPU issue however I will give it a shot. keep in mind though my processor is one of the few that runs a 220 WATT TDP at all times even when at base speeds. these run so hot (not mine particularly) that I even considered trying to get my hands on the cooler Linus used in this video before I built the system. I think honestly the problem may be thermals. since when in sleep mode, your fans and a few other components shut down or sit on standby rather than working as if they were on mid to low load. I suspect the PC may be heating up over the sleep time then when I re-awaken the system, Windows doesn't activate or throttle my fans high enough immediately, causing it to overheat and boot down. however I have never had an overheating issue with any past computer so I don't know how an overheating PC even handles itself in those situations.

I have this processor and i also had some stability issues when i installed it.  Did you tune your bios setting?  The stock setting are usually not good for this processor. You have to set the cpu the same way as a 8350 that is overclock to 4.7Ghz. Boost the voltage, CPU Load Line, etc. Took me a while but i got my Fx-9590 to be full stable for 24h on prime95 at 4.7Ghz no turbo boost on a 360mm aio kit. Since then i have no more crash on wake up or when i game. 

 

Be sure to look at the right cpu temps and the VRM temps. these should not get pass 65-70 degrees celcius under heavy load (Prime95 or aida64 stability test or gaming) or you will get stability issues.

 

Try using only 2 ram stick.The more ram stick you have, the more demanding it is for the memory controller and this can affect the stability. Also its a dual channel controller so the best thing is to have 2(or4) ram stick of the same memory size for better ram speed. if you have 1 or 3 ram stick you get half the speed you could get with 2 or 4 stick

@HighFad I have been trying to tune the BIOS myself but I don't really know how voltage multipliers work so I haven't really messed with them, it's stable in any situation unless it's put on sleep then reawaken though.

what did the pc do during 12h? it look like it was idling or you did lite internet navigation. you should try 12h or more of occt or prime95 stability test to be sure its 100% stable. start it before going to bed is an easy way to do it. if you have error you have to do some tuning in the bios and test again until you have no error.

if you follow those settings, use Multiplier 23.5 and be sure its stable before trying to overclock

 

in my case I only had to solve my stability issues for it to stop crashing at wake up. I hope this help you.

I played some games, I didn't have HW monitor open during the time so the maxes are actually wrong, the normal max temps while in game is 50C for package, however after the 24 hour mark one of my fans seemed to be ticking and it was concerning me, however I went ahead with a heavy stress test and a few games. the max temps were still manageable 55C I forgot to post the print screen I had before I shut down the PC for cleaning and connection testing. @HighFad thanks for the help, ill post with an update as to what I had to do if I can get it fixed and stable

after changing my bios settings and running a test on OCCT I was experiencing severe throttling at a firing 70 C during the test, I don't want to put the processor through a 12 hour form of that, I might try again with my case side taken off and a massive box fan next to my PC to suck the hot air out. @HighFad the CPU was watering between 4.7 GHz and 1.4 GHz Windows was registering a constant 3.6 GHz though. I wonder why that is

1.488V ~ 1.500V is kind of the Core Voltage limit for air cooling... your FX-9590 is already running at the voltage level.

70*C is getting close to the maximum safe operating temperature range for the CPU.

Just curious what the VRM temperatures are like -- they could be thermal throttling too, given the ASUS M5A99FX R2.0 uses a 6+2 VRM system.

 

I am surprised HWMonitor is only giving you CPU and mainboard temperature readings, and nothing for VRM, NB, SB...

 

BTW, I found the Temperatures - CPU measurement to be more accurate than the Temperatures - Package.

 

Simply put, the FX-9590 is basically a FX-8350 forced to run at 4.7 GHz by dumping 1.47V+ on it.

Anyways, if 4.7 GHz is NOT stable, you might just need to clock it down to 4.6 / 4.5 GHz, and see if you can bring the voltage down with that.

(My particular FX-8350 was able to run 4.8 GHz with ~1.4V, and 4.9 GHz with 1.45 ~ 1.47V ... and 1.51 / 1.52V for 5.0 GHz)

my CPU is water cooled. @-rascal- I have tried to underclock the CPU down to even 3.0 GHz and I still experience these blue screens on wake of my computer. I don't know exactly why or how though

What water cooler are you using?

 

What frequency is your RAM running at?

Do you have DOCP (aka XMP) enabled, or is it currently running at stock JEDEC DDR3-1333 MHz?

 

4.0 GHz is way low...when the FX-8350 is rated for 4.0 GHz stock.

 

What is your current power settings in Windows?

@-rascal- my water cooler is an aquachanger 240 and my RAM is running at 1600 I think, it's the stock for the RAM. (x3 corsair vengeance 8 GB ddr3). what is DOCP? I haven't seen that setting in my bios so it's probably enabled. my windows power settings are on the default settings for high performance.

I managed to actually get a minidump file from the last crash so im going to upload it here for you, maybe it could contain some useful information on the root problem of the crashing. I use an online dumpreader to check these but this one its kinda just gibberish to me. @-rascal- @HighFad

Okay, do your cooler should be adequate in keep a ~4.7 GHz 8-core FX chip cool.

BUT, keep in mind, you now not have anything to circulate the air around the VRMs and the CPU socket area, so they will run warmer compared to if you were using tower / air cooler.

 

DOCP = DRAM OverClock Profile = XMP = eXtreme Memory Profile.

JEDEC default is DDR3-1333 MHz; it will not set it to 1600 MHz automatically.

 

When you changed it to run at DDR3-1600, did you also check if the memory timings are set to the correct values?

If you enable DOCP, it should correct the memory timings for you automatically.

If you changed it to DDR3-1600 MHz manually, your timings are most likely on default/auto settings.

 

How to enable DOCP ... using screenshots from my ASUS Crosshair V Fomrula  (your M5A99FX R2.0 should be similar...if not identical)

2) Select one of the Memory profiles programmed into your RAM sticks

 

3) Change the DRAM voltage to what is specified on the RAM

You need to have a program that can properly read the dump files.

I don't have anything installed on my current workstation (not at home) to read the dump file...so will have to do this later.

these are my current BIOS settings and I have actually thought of that, my case is set up in a way that there is cool air being forced in on my VRM over my IO ports and my water cooler is forcing hot air from the top out of the case. so basically my case has a large intake on the front of the case and a small intake on the back top of my case and then the hot air exhaust causing the cool air to be forced up over the mobo and over the socket vrm's and then out of the case. however I plan to install an intake onto the back of my socket and possibly attach a fan to the heatsink of my VRM's but I'm not 100% sure of the safety of that kind of operation. so im a little iffy about it.

I noticed in one of your screenshots is says "8 cores Running @ 4700 MHZ 1550 mV"

If that is the Core Voltage, then that is HIGH. CPU Load-Line Calibration is adding an extra 75 mV to your 1475.

You need to use the LLC setting(s), so that your voltages are as stable as possible.

Too low, and it will dip (e.g 1.475 dips down to 1.450 under load), and too high it will go over.

Then again, you need to monitor the voltage out of BIOS.

 

What is your G.Skill RAM kit rated for?

With DOCP enabled, you usually don't need to fiddle with the timings -- I see DRAM RAS has been manually (?) set to 27.

 

Try increasing your CPU-NB voltage a little bit; it usually helps stabilize higher overclocks.

e.g. 1.200 V.

they are rated for 1600. I did adjust my memory timings a while ago when I was having severe stability issues (the resolution was changing memory timing from T1 to T2) since then my crashes were substantially less frequent, but still present where I then corrected that issue by disabling the low power settings, where then my crashes were only happening when I put the computer to sleep and reawoke the PC. that is about what I'm at now except that when I ran the stability test recommended above I did get a crash during it. but it was such a hard hang it didn't even blue screen, silly me didn't even think to take note of the temps my frozen screen was reading at the time of the crash or even how long the test had been running. I will increase that CPU NB voltage before re running the stability test. I'm just concerned of the temps so I'll be doing it with my case open most likely.

Ah yes, command rate 2T will usually help with stability in exchange for slightly higher latency.

Not a huge problem, though.
