Illustration Workstation upgrade - Need help to make my choice

Acapucho

Good morning, everyone,

The configuration of my workstation is starting to reach its limits.

Currently my configuration is as follows:

  • Intel i7 5820k at 4GHz
  • Asus x99-a/usb 3.1
  • Geforce GTX 980
  • 4x 16 GB Corsair Vengeance LPX DDR4 2400 MHz CL14
  • be quiet! Dark Power Pro 11 850W 80PLUS Platinum

  1. Budget: $2500-3000 for CPU/GPU/RAM/NVME/Motherboard
  2. Objective: Versatile use 80% work / 20% gaming. Software used Illustrator (most of the time), inDesign, Premiere and After effect
  3. Display: 21:9, 4K and 120hz
  4. Why: My work experience having become too jerky I am looking for an upgrade of my configuration. As for the game, I have to start making too many compromises on quality for my taste.

So the objective of the new configuration:

  1. Ensure a smooth work experience
  2. Be able to play in 4k / 120 frames per second at maximum settings

The components I already have and will keep:

  • Box : Define R6
  • Power supply: Dark Power Pro 11 850W
  • CPU Cooling: Corsair h150i
  • The ones I'm almost sure about:
  • RAM: Corsair Vengeance RGB PRO Series 32GB DDR4 3200 MHz
  • NVMe : Samsung SSD 970 EVO M.2 PCIe NVMe 1Tb

Where I hesitate and where I will need your help:
CPU: i9-9900K or Threadripper 2920X
Motherboard: open to proposal

Thank you in advance for your help

I'll say 1950x or 2950x for a couple more cores with something like a asrock taichi

It was my first choice but I'm not sure I really exploit the 16 cores of the 2950x. Currently what poses a problem with my configuration is the too low frequency of my processor not so much the number of core
