Microsoft blocks Windows 10 Version 1809 on some PCs due to bad Intel drivers

The Redmond-based software giant says it blocked the October update on some Intel PCs due to bad display drivers released by Intel.

“Intel inadvertently released versions of its display driver (versions 24.20.100.6344, 24.20.100.6345) to OEMs that accidentally turned on unsupported features in Windows,” the company says.

The original version of Windows 10 version 1809, released in early October, came with an issue caused by broken Intel audio drivers, but Microsoft says this is a different bug caused by another set of drivers.

“After updating to Windows 10, version 1809, audio playback from a monitor or television connected to a PC via HDMI, USB-C, or a DisplayPort may not function correctly on devices with these drivers,” the software giant explains.

New cumulative updates should land by the end of the month:
Microsoft goes on to explain that it’s already working with Intel on resolving the bug, but an ETA isn’t yet available. However, new cumulative updates are believed to be just around the corner for Windows 10 version 1809, though it’s not known if a fix for this issue would be included given it was only recently acknowledged.

“Microsoft is working with Intel to expire these display drivers, including coordinating with OEMs, and will provide an update on the resolution in an upcoming release,” it says.

Windows 10 version 1809 was re-released by Microsoft last week after the company pulled the original build in early October due to a bug potentially causing data loss.

While the new version is supposed to be more refined, the number of problems experienced by updating systems is still worrying, with Microsoft still remaining painfully slow when it comes to shipping fixes for the issues it acknowledges
.

Well, it seems like Intel here is another culprit why some PCs don't receive Windows 10 version 1809 update yet. A big company like intel must have been caught off guard by Microsoft releasing 1809. I don't know about you, but this is the first time I'm hearing of this unannounced 1809.

I had no issues, then again I have all up-to-date hardware, so far the only problem I had was the "YOUR PRO LICENSE IS EXPIRING SOON" pop ups because of that weird bug with Windows Pro but that went away a day or two later.

You make it sound like there's a ton of problems that affect everyone. The "new" problems are relatively limited in scope, although you could argue Intel display drivers could include a large segment of the deployments.

Only updated one system to 1809 so far, and it is working without new problems, and fixed one old one. Not in a hurry to update the rest, will do it when they get pushed.

Main system: i9-7980XE, Asus X299 TUF mark 2, Noctua D15, Corsair Vengeance Pro 3200 3x 16GB 2R, RTX 3070, NZXT E850, GameMax Abyss, Samsung 980 Pro 2TB, Acer Predator XB241YU 24" 1440p 144Hz G-Sync + HP LP2475w 24" 1200p 60Hz wide gamut
Gaming laptop: Lenovo Legion 5, 5800H, RTX 3070, Kingston DDR4 3200C22 2x16GB 2Rx8, Kingston Fury Renegade 1TB + Crucial P1 1TB SSD, 165 Hz IPS 1080p G-Sync Compatible

I haven't had any issues with 1809 myself on Win10 Home, but I don't have anything in documents on the C drive, or use Intel audio drivers.

Not really worth it for the theme alone IMO as task manager or control panel doesn't apply the dark theme.

Much like the RTX 2080 Ti failures unhappy affected people shout much louder than those not affected, when GN Steve went looking for failure rates they were no higher than previous generations thought that could also be a case of too soon to really know.

User files getting deleted is an epic fail though.

The issue is with Intel. The block is only on those who are affected.

Does anyone have more info regarding what exactly is breaking? I don't quite understand how it can be Intel's fault that their driver, that worked fine before, suddenly breaks after Microsoft makes changes to the OS.

All Intel drivers are for 1803 and less. None of Intel drivers are ready for 1809.

It's literally Microsoft doing a job of Intel by protecting users, because Intel's drivers appear to be shit. Which is surprising given how absent of any kind of features they are compared to Radeon or NVIDIA graphics...
