NVME Heatsink or no

Jimkirk363

A friend of mine has a motherboard that has no heatsinks for his NVME SSD drives and he was wondering whether or not to invest in one and if so which one to get.

Thanks

The thing about NVME SSDs is: The controller chip shouldn't heat up too much, or it'll throttle back and you'll lose performance.  But the flash cells should not be cooled, because that wears them out faster.  Thus, according to PCPer's storage editor:

If you're not operating the SSD so much, you know, for such long periods at such high loads that you're worried about the controller actually throttling, I would not even install the heatsink.  If there's a motherboard that has the heatsink plate that goes on there, if you can get away with it, don't even put the plate on. I don't have any active cooling or heatsink attached to any nvme SSDs that I have in even in any sort of my production or, I think, even at the office I don't think we have any installed just because it's — not only is it overkill but it's just better (as long as you know you're not to the point where you know you're gonna cause that SSD to throttle), to just let it be on its own.

I don't know about cooling the SSDs wears out the cells faster, but the heatsinks and thermal pads for M.2 can be skipped, look at the specifications of the units and you will see they were manufactured to work under certain temperatures levels that are usually difficult to get for a standard user.
