temps are low, usage is low -> frames not good still

stamparts

So I have this nice 240 refresh rate monitor. I got a high-end rig to play overwatch at this framerate, what I hope will be a little bit higher, even. Instead, Overwatch frames are 140-200 with ALL SETTINGS SET TO LOW @ 1080p, so that's wierd. I check msi afterburner (photo attached).

rig: gtx 1070 ti & a very, very overclocked i7 4770k.

hmmm. So there's nothing that should be throttling and my game is on all-low settings with a framerate max at 300fps... BUT my pc won't work harder despite usage and temperatures being reasonably low. What on earth is going on here?msiaft.thumb.png.2870100dc60d24fbee0aafa3430b934b.png

note: overwatch allows a maximum framerate of 300, which is what I'm trying to shoot for but my system won't get there

What happens when you go to 'Ultra' settings. Have you downloaded the latest graphics drivers, also if you just purchased that GPU did you use DDU before installing the latest Nvidia drivers?

I just used DDU before clean installing drivers right before I decided to make a post. I reinstalled the drivers with only the graphics drivers, no geforce experience or sound drivers. I also tried installing it with geforce experience and that didn't work either. My framerate is pretty much the same on ultra setting, funny enough.

That's weird cause those numbers at Ultra seem normal, couldn't tell you why your 'Low' settings performance is that far off though.

Change this to display based and see what it does.

I'm going to completely reset my PC and install graphics drivers MSI afterburner and OverWatch only - see what happens

You may not get a change in fps. You're looking to see if this changes your GPU usage.

Most likely the same results will happen. Unless you haven't updated to the driver that was released yesterday yet. That may help but I would keep your expectation low. Drivers most of the time seem like the first thing to change but from my experience, the driver you've always been using is usually just fine. In fact, I think I have updated my driver twice in two years. Been using the same one for probably a good year now. It's performed so well for me, no reason to update it.

This is what I would pay attention to in Overwatch. I don't own the game but I hear all the time from multiple people that the more CPU usage you get in Overwatch, the less GPU usage you will be getting.

Well, I upgraded my gpu recently - I'll see what happens and get back with screenshots of afterburner on low and high settings and with display-based/300 cap too.

There's the answer right there. You might could try reseating your GPU if nothing else helps. Then update to the latest driver for that GPU.

well, you see the thing is I reset my pc after I switched out the GPU's so it shouldn't really be a problem.

I uploaded some more screenshots at either display-based or 300 mixed with low or ultra settings.

order: ultra/display based -> low/300 -> low/display-based -> ultra/300

so it looks like the gpu is not pushing itself that hard if it's hitting 200 fps on low settings, but will go to 100% on ultra to try to get to 200fps.

All of this seems completely normal. What are you trying to accomplish? More than 200 fps right?

Try this, put all your settings on low/off except for texture quality. Put texture quality on high. No limit on your fps. I think it's custom then 300. Vsync off, triple buffering off, reduce buffering off. Graphics quality should say EPIC but under advanced, put everything on low/off except for texture quality. Put it at high.

Play for like 5-15 minutes(maybe one round) on the Oasis map. Check your fps in both the before game lobby(where everyone is waiting together to go out and kill) and check your fps when you get to the other side and do all the killing(this area).

Your GPU and CPU shouldn't be doing much usage(around 50-70% usage for both), this is normal. No need to screenshot any MSI AB usages. Just tell me the fps you are getting in both these areas on average. Between ??? and ??? in the before game lobby and between ??? and ??? in the killing area on other side of map.

So before the match begins (ie there's no fighting/killing happening and we're all waiting in spawn) my frames are capped out at 300. Once the fighting starts it drops to 180-220.

This is almost completely normal with a 1070 ti in Overwatch. I say almost because there are things you can do with your PC to get better performance in games. You should be able to go from 180-220 to 205-245(seeing mostly around 225) with the settings you just used. How to accomplish this is optimizing your PC itself by things like disabling background processes, disabling dozens of things in Windows 10 settings(if you have W10 that is), disabling in-game overlays(in all the clients you use).

In a game like Overwatch, your fps will vary in certain areas of the game itself. Just as you saw you were at 300 fps in the lobby. It's like this with the majority of games that have an open world for you to explore. Like I said though, optimize your PC in ways you may not have done yet to gain an extra boost in performance.

There's also overclocking your 1070 ti.
