I know this is probably true of most models there's always a chance of catastrophic failure when it comes to high voltage devices...but it truly does feels like the R290 of this generation already.

No.  I am actually glad that Nvidia launched a new architecture. It's good that they keep trying to innovate. And it's good that they kept marching forward despite the failures of Vega as competition.

 

My problem is that it did not replace the old gen at similar price points. Instead they created a whole new elite pricing tier for the new parts. They should have gone the usual route and had the RTX 2070 replacing the gtx 1070 and so on..

 

They went with a different strategy and so for the first time we have a new GPU architecture which does not improve price / performance over the old parts. I think that this strategy is damaging for PC gaming on the long term cause it makes it less accessible and more elitist.

Meanwhile my overclocked watercooled 1080ti reports less than 45C everywhere whilst overclocked to 2.0GHz.

 

Nevermind the disappointing benchmarks I am seeing here and there of Ray Tracing, at least in Battlefield 5 (which I expected to be a disappointment for other reasons).

 

 

I'll be waiting for the GTX 3XXX series so I can upgrade for Cyberpunk 2077.

Seems to be not a temperature issue, not an OS or driver issue, not a firmware issue.

 

Evidence points towards a flaw in the silicon or Nvidia's reference board design.

GPUs don't just die like that.

 

For example on my R9 290 even if I put some stupidly heavy workload and overclock a bit the GPU still knows what temperatures and voltages etc it can tolerate. So on the fly it is monitoring performance adjusting various parameters in order to give me the best possible performance while staying within certain thresh-holds. Even if i had the terrible stock cooler this would be the case. The drivers are BIOS are designed to keep the GPU safe and throttle performance before it goes into the danger zone. This is true even for GPUs like the GTX 480 or the Vega 64. Because the IHVs don't want RMAs.

 

If one particular part of the PCB is repeatedly blowing out it has to be a flaw in the PCB manufacturing or design.

From my perspective what I can see is that Turing is actually a very good new architecture, I think the nvidia engineers have done a good job (apart form this PCB design flaw which is causing it to catch fire).

 

I think where they have screwed up is the marketing and strategy

-the main selling point should have been traditional performance

-if they had price it normally then they actually do have enough performance gains to market it normally=

-they should have used Ray Tracing as a bonus feature. e.g. "our partners games have implemented this feature and it gives you a glimpse into the future of rendering"

-they should not have tried to to convince people spending $1000 on a GPU to play at 1080p and only 60fps, people know it doesn't look good enough to be worth it.

 

My main concern is that we cannot keep doings that are damaging to PC gaming. The lack of memory availability, the GPU mining crisis, now the Turing GPU pricing. It seems like we are trying to kill PC gaming by making it more elitist, less affordable and discouraging people from taking it up. I know that PC gaming won't die but all this stuff really damages the market.

 

Ryzen was a good thing that happened for PC gaming, we need more of that. Nvidia should be careful not to poison their own market, they may increase margins now but damage it on the long term.
