I think, to a point, there are plenty of people that are into this kinda crap that would NOT be into anything close to regular cp. It's a different sexual perversion for most people. I think it's a different thing and it needs to be approached differently. Most of all though, japan's otaku culture needs to change. Erm, not everywhere is the US, the age of consent in many countries, (including the UK where i live), is 16. A 17 year old dating upto around 23 is nothing eyebrow raising or even non-normal IRL. I'll admit not all anime fits that mold, (though if it's two sub 16 high schoolers romancing each other than even the US can't throw stones, it happens everywhere pretty much).

 

Personally i suspect Valve may be facing issues of "can we legally do this without someone somwhere finding a way to get us in court".

yah. Keep in mind though, I first got into anime probably 11-12 years ago, but I stopped really keeping up on the community crap the past 5-6 years. I know people have been loose with it in the past, but it meant just that last I checked though I could be missing a shift in just the general nomenclature. While I've noticed people being more careful about it due to crackdowns, I've also noticed the idea itself being more generally accepted as normal.

More seriously whilst i believe the english term tracs back to that i'm not so sure about the Japanese equivalent. You've got to remember that the origination of terms won't be synonymous or even have the exact meaning to the people involved.

 

Much of japan's fascination with young looking women comes from the same place our own western fascination with college or university girls, (depending on the exact age of consent where you are), comes from. Namely we idolise youth as an ideal of beauty. Its a bit more complex a term over in Japan but i'm not an all out expert on Japanese society so i'm not gonna go over it, i'd doubtless get things wrong. They simply seem to sue a lower baseline, and it's probably differs for the same reason it does in the western world, different ages of consent, (something i admit i didn't know before this thread).

I will say that changes my perspective some. Still not into loli and would have to agree that its intent is to originally represent pedophilia.

With that out of the way, whether this applies to the blocked game or not would depend on the game itself - I would say it's self evident when a graphic novel, manga or whatever trespasses into softcore porn, but I can't make a judgement without seeing it.

 

Regardless, as long as it's valve (and not a government) enforcing this ban, I don't personally have a problem with it even if the content were in the realms of what is acceptable - there are other storefronts and they are free to choose what to sell (in fact, i wish they were a lot pickier about certain titles).

Yeah the english language is a hot mess, but even though other languages are more internally consistent, (generally speaking), that doesn't mean that another language has an exact term for the same thing. They may even have terms for concept the english language has no equivalent.

On a more serious note, this whole topic bothers me deeply, esp the 4chan screenshot in the op. It feels like the virtue-signaling is getting into law-enforcement all over the place and people cry wolf on hentai while ignoring the silent sex trafficing going on literally in every developed country on earth. There is so much heinous shit going on every single fucken day that it feels silly to focus on people enjoying cartoon sex (some of it beyond repugnant, but who am i to judge) while actually dangerous people roam the streets and throw pedo acqusations around like its paper planes
