Dell XPS 8700 Case Swap?

I can't actually tell where the air intake is supposed to be, but if it has 2 front fan mounts then it should be good.

Yeah, it can support 4 fans in total. so I take at least 2 should be front. I guess I should see how many fan headers my motherboard has, if not, then I guess there's adapters I could use with the PSU?

Okay great. I can't afford to get extra fans right away, but fans seems to be like a little under $20 for offerings from cooler master and noctua, and also seem like pretty simple things to add (screw in place, connect to header), so it's something I can add myself later. That's good.

Edit:

Well, it seems according to the board diagram here: https://downloads.dell.com/manuals/all-products/esuprt_desktop/esuprt_xps_desktop/xps-8700_owner's manual_en-us.pdf (page 13)

The mobo only has one fan connector, so I'd need a 3 or 4 way splitter, or some other solution.

Thanks, seems all in is order, and I know what to buy. Now just to call my guy tomorrow to make sure he knows that in  2-3 weeks I'd need him to swamp my case same day, just like he replaced my CPU and cooler same day. Guy says as long as it's not busy he can do things same day, and to call ahead, just to make sure he can, if I don't wanna be without my PC for more than a few hours.

@fasauceome, it just did it again. Frooze during the mafia 3 demo, and got the buzzing sound.

i had MSI AfterBurner showing CPU and GPU temp on screen, and when it happened the CPU temp was only 68 and the GPU temp was only 46, so is there something else I should check? Those temps are fine for both.

Given that info, I do feel like there's some kind of software issue, I think your hardware is fine

Well, I did just  a couple days ago update to the latest drivers for the GPU. I was told by many people that my 3tb seagate drive is crap and I should really replace it, and it is the drive I have my steam folder on, so maybe a small failure to read something?

You said you think it's a software issue, what would you suggest looking at first?

Not the hard drive. HDsentinel says both my drives are perfect. 100% healthy, no errors or bad sectors found.

I would look into the crash types you're experiencing in whatever games.

@fasauceome According to this video and the comments, it has to do with power:

My PSU is 600W maybe it's not always enough now with the new processor. I am thinking of upping it to a 750W to be safe, maybe even 800w.

But for now I tried the fix in the comments. I'll see if it works.

I would look at seeing what you can do with your current case, Dell to a new case is a bit risky.

You could upgrade fans to ones with higher airflow. You could also make sure everything has been cleaned of dust.

A warm CPU could be fixed with a reapplication of thermal paste. The first time I did that on my i7 920 it was a revelation!

You could also address airflow within the current case with cable extenders to move things around or even haul everything out you can and see if you can remove drive bays etc that might block airflow.

To me it would be more fun to see how I can improve the current case than just move things to a new case and bring along all the other issues.

Well that MasterBox 5 is significantly above my budget, but what are your thoughts on this one? While above my budget, it's not that much above, may be willing to sacrifice a trip to mcodnalds or two if it is indeed good.

Step down the the MB510L, it's $10CAD cheaper and has arguably better side vents for airflow. You will still want 2 extra front fans since the case only comes with 1 in the rear

Unfortunately, it doesn't have a 5.25 drive bay, which I need at least one of because I do use CDs/DVDs.

I might then suggest the Fractal Design Focus G

https://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811352067

It's not as attractive, but it has actual airflow to it. The MB600L's side vents are just way too narrow to allow decent airflow in.

yup, seems good, for some reason when I choose the red color version, the price went up $5 to $74... why the hell would a different color affect price?

This is my prime candidate now, but I am experimenting with other things, because I heard my problem can be caused by a corrupted registry or at times not having enough power to supply a load. So I rebuilt my registry since I did have to mess with it before and delete some stuff, and turned down the maximum processor power to 80% to reduce the maximum load. Gonna take a couple days to see if the problem comes back or not, if it doesn't I'll turn the CPU power back to max, and then see again. I may need to upgrade my 600W PSU to a 750W or 800W.

However, a better case will still be happening, it's just a question of sooner or later, because my GPU has no temp problems, and while my CPU gets warm, it fluctuates in the 70s and barely ever gets to 83 from what I saw, so it does need better airflow, but is not an emergency either.

The black, blue  and red versions are perhaps either in less stock, higher demand or some other unforseen reason that causes the price to go up (There's also technically a gray version).

The processor was literally professionally installed by a tech one week ago. I don't think that's the issue. Also, the last time the freezing and buzzing happened MSI Afterburner was only showing the CPU temp as 68C.

Well, so far so good, played a few hours of Far Cry 5 again, and no issue yet, that includes defeating the boss of one area, which includes a big mission that is very demanding on the hardware. Good sign, but can't count anything as fixed yet.

If so, then I will probably have to upgrade my PSU first, and then modify my case, or get a better one.
