Youtube is a dead platform, they already ban anything with copyright claim, ban anything with SJW claim, banned people they disagree with politically, banned mature/sensitive content, banned talking about controversial stuff, they will ban all hacking of code or hardware (apple will make sure of the latter), they will keep putting up rules where people who owned anything or disagree with you can strike you and you will be removed/censored.

 

As it stands right now there is absolutely no future for free video platforms, its unsustainable financially, even with many forced ads that you cant skip you cannot sustain a video platform.

The future is grim as SJW's are winning over all internet and media and corporations control governments and ban everyone. Linux is being taken over by corporations and SJW's aswell, its just going to get worse and worse for freedoms.

The only thing that would change between a free software game and a game that is proprietary is the art remains under a copyrighted license, while the project file (and the code for the engine to compile it with) are released under GPL.

 

Realistically, there is no reason for someone to want to steal game logic code, and the game engine would have to be free software to begin with in this scenario, so nobody is at a loss, but every player stands to gain.

 

It also still makes piracy illegal as you would be unable to legally transfer the artwork (models textures audio etc) needed for the game to run.

 

The main problem is it relies on developers actually adopting it, which is possible for indies, but highly unlikely for AAA companies. On that count, yeah we need proper laws as you say.

And how do you suppose that could happen? There's plenty of video hosting competitors spread around already do you care to guess why none can seem to get off the ground to even 10% of the traffic and views youtube commands?

So any competitor would have to be ready to take incomprehensible costs with no end in sight and basically import most of the problems youtube has already. If it was as easy as just populating many smaller sites with videos it would have affected youtube already but what works at the end of the day is precisely their massive size and seer amounts of content along with algorithms that do a good job at engaging viewers on more content they'd like to see.

Ok let me get a bit "controversial" here for a while: Content creators are over-stating their relevance. Yes even the big ones.

 

Let me elaborate on that premise: Yes content creators are important to the site but the 1st point to make is well, try to Google any "most subscribed" and "most viewed" lists for youtube. It's been many years since that list is made up of at least half music channels and you will even see the "VEVO" name very prominently on that list commanding the most attention period when put together.

 

Those are not "independent content creators" those are literally massive record labels that created the VEVO consortium as a sort of cease-fire agreement to coexist and put their efforts together. So for all intends and purposes youtube has already been taken over by the "old media" so to speak.

 

Now on to the 2nd point which is that yes, music it's still the main draw for youtube but people stay for the quirky, creative, independent content creators right? To an extend some of them are also mind-bendingly huge like Felix of course but most of them got to the top because of youtube's algorithm and honestly, dumb luck and being able to happen to be early with the exact type of content the algorithm now favors counts a lot more than talent.

 

Sorry to burst the bubble of many people but most of the content on youtube it's not special at all and yes that includes Linus who was greatly favored by riding said luck wave and yes, while he has been business saavy enough to make the most of it he owns most of his company and continued success to the youtube algorithm and initial luck with both the NCIX and LTT channels.

So after youtube has enough content and switches their algorithm it basically creates a critical mass effect for some content creators and they raise very quickly to the top and are very lucky or quick to learn how to basically cheat the system to get their views ball rolling.

 

So what happens if those big accounts start walking away from the algorithm and the bigger arena that youtube created that enabled them to find their massive audiences? Well they're going to be humbled very quickly and see just how much of their popularity wasn't due to their hard work, dedication and talent but just dumb luck being on the right place (youtube) at the right time (An algorithm change that now favors the type of content you create)

 

I'd love to be proven wrong but I've seen so many channels quickly wither and die without leaving the platform just by changing the type of content they deliver even when they try to stay ahead of the curve with patreon support and cultivating communities of fans it all withers down into nothingness and it's surprisingly fragile. Leaving youtube behind completely would basically mean having to start looking for career opportunities elsewhere waaaay faster than even their worst predictions would anticipate.

It's just a bad apple spoiling the bunch problem.  You tube is too big to have dedicated people who are both impartial and educated in all the necessary fields viewing and judging each video.   Therefore like most laws, regulations and rules,  innocent people miss out in an attempt stop the real problem.

This is interesting because it's almost a catalyst for more to come. Could iPhone repair videos be banned or just general hardware modifications/repairs be banned as well? Could a tutorial showing sentdex building AI with Python for games like GTA V and StarCraft 2 be banned as well? Technically a mod? But it's intended to be educational. What about any Hackintosh or MacOS virtualization videos? What videos on Regedits on Windows 10? To remove certain prompts or to stop the system from updating?

 

I think the 'ADpocalypse' was a sign of more 'censorship' or curation on the platform to come.

You mean one of them, YouTube has a lot of problems and their flagging system is definitely one of them but they need to do something that their legal team can contest in court so as a result the users are the ones getting the short end of the stick. IMO if I were a content creator I would only use YouTube/Facebook for mirroring my videos and keep a copy of all of my content on my own infrastructure just to be safe because YouTube offers no guarantees to their users and every single creator is at their mercy.

This is a dumb move made my YouTube. Yes, cheating in multiplayer is wrong, however if you just do it in a closed-environment (For example only with friends) it's fine by me. Then again if you try to cheat the system, it's a good way to know if the anti-cheating software actually works or not. So I don't see why these videos have to be removed. Also, the fact that people are calling this PC is just stupid. This is about what's right and what's wrong and clearly YouTube is in the wrong here. Removing/censoring these videos will not help.

YouTube just wants to prevent them from getting into trouble over people modding games or their engines and putting tutorials/showcases of it on YouTube.

Understandable but .. what happened to "Broadcast yourself" what if you are seriously into that; I'm partially in that scene without annoying others or hurting the companies it pains me to see this.

I'm seriously considering taking down my PS3 CFW Tutorial, and scrapped plans for the followup.
