MSI Z68A-G43 G3

Go to solution Solved by -rascal-,

Oh.

MSi didn't pay NVidia for the SLI licensing. I don't know if SLI will work or not for that reason...

Oh, and also...this is probably why.

According to MSi, the Z68A-G43 (G3)...

  • One slot is PCI-E X16 3.0 @ X16 speed
  • The second slot is PCI-E X16 2.0 @ X4 speed

Page 1-5 of the MSi Z68A-G43 (G3) manual.

The second PCI-E X16 slot is wired to run at X4 electrically.

SLI requires a minimum of X8.

There's your problem.

How to tell if it's wired for X16, X8, or x4?

Look closely at the slot.

X16 has pins / fingers that fills the entire slot.

X8 has pins / fingers that goes to the half-way point.

X4 has pins / fingers that goes a fourth of the entire slot.

Hey guys,

My motherboard says that it isn't compatible (or something) with SLI but it is with Crossfire, if I was to get another video card and SLI, would it work?

Usually if a mobo is only Crossfire supported, it means that it doesn't have a second 8x or 16x lane. And IIRC SLI doesnt work in x4

I do have a second 8x PCI-E, someone said to me that so long as the slots are there then I can SLI on a non-SLI board but before I do anything stupid, I thought that it would be wise to make sure.

Looking at the mobo, it seems to have a gen3 x16 and gen 2 x16. So those are in order.

Funny that they don't support it.

Are you sure it runs in 8x when you have a card in the top x16 lane...?

I have no idea, how do I test?

I have another video card but it is a GTX 650 Ti so I can't test out the SLI or something like that (goddamn I sound like a moron).

I'm not actually for sure how to test for it, you are going to have to find the manual or something for the motherboard and read through it to find out.
