Strix Vega 56 or Reference Vega 64

I'm doing an AMD build, and I'm hoping to get some advice on the Vega series card.

 

My build so far:

CPU - Ryzen 7 1700x

Mobo - MSI Gaming Pro Carbon

RAM - 32 Gig 3000

AIO - NZXT Kraken X62

Case - NZXT 500i

PSU - EVGA Super Nova 750 80+ Gold

 

I'm trying to decide on if a Vega 56 with 3 fans, like the Asus Strix can out perform a reference style Vega 64.  The Strix 56 is a bit more cash, but it fits the aesthetic of the build better and being more a neutral color with some RGB accents is nice.  But from a performance stand point, I'm assuming I'd be able to OC the 56 quite a bit, and the 3 fans on the card should keep the thermals in check.  The reference 64 cards are, on paper, obviously more powerful, but they look kinda dumb and always have Red in their color scheme. (I know the aesthetic is kind of shallow, but this is my first build with aesthetics in mind, so I'm trying to stick to it)  I hear nothing but bad things about reference cards with the single fan.  Bad thermals, and loud fan noise.

 

I wouldn't say that I'm the most hard core gamer out there, but I want my gaming experience to be enjoyable.  I tend to play RPG titles, and First Person Horror. (Nier: Automata, Resident Evil VII that sort of thing.)

 

I know per dollar I could probably get a better card from Nvidia, but I've already got a Free Sync monitor, and I don't mind spending a couple extra bucks on the card, because I saved quite a bit by doing Free Sync over G-Sync.

Yes because the cooler on the reference Vega cards (except the liquid one) is a joke, not even a tasteful one at that.

 

Overclocking the memory and core with careful use of voltage should let the Strix V56 go faster than the reference V64 with only undervolting (because it runs too dam hot) and overclocking memory.

Hey, thanks!  That's kind of what I was thinking, just good to have some confirmation from people smarter than me. :)

If you allow the VEGA56 to use as much power as it wants as in an extra 120W it will outperform a 2070 at the cost of power usage

I own a reference vega 64

 

are you planning on gaming at 4k or 1440p???

 

4k is doable in a number of titles, 1440p you can throw basically everything at it and stay above 60 fps or higher on most titles and I'm using a 1950x threadripper cpu - currently have another reference vega 64 in route due to sale making it 430 + the games bundle that I personally value at least 60 dollars worth and with one coop game I was curious about "strange brigade"

 

if your case has at least adequate airflow the card isn't really that loud unless you go to 4k... when it tries to do 4k it gets loud... to the point that I'm happy I have a great headset

 

if you want to save a hundred bucks and game at 1440p vega 56 may be the better choice as it will perform relatively similar and you can get some beefy cards right now as I think newegg even sent me an email for one for 330

 

P.S. ---- once i finish my research my threadripper + vega's are going to be water cooled - the dillema I'm having is deciding on whether to not use copper piping as I know that will work and should be simple but for some reason no one shows a water cooled build with soft copper tubing so trying to figure out why no one uses it....

I skimmed through the thread, sorry If I restate what others said. Giving the vega56 more power will boost its performance nicely, and since its a strix its gonna have great cooling. The cooling should give you more headroom for oc's.

As an owner of both a reference VEGA 64 (Gigabyte RX VEGA 64) and a custome one (PowerColor RX VEGA 64 Red Devil), definitely get one with a better cooler.....even if it's a slightly weaker card. My stock card hit about 80C on memory and about 75C core temps, the Red Devil is easily >10C less than that! You can always OC the VEGA 56 to close to a VEGA 64 level performance.

God, how I hate exaggerations like this (even in jest as TS may take it as fact), yes, stock VEGA's are loud and hot.....but those with good AIB partners coolers aren't bad. Yes, the system does get warmer as warm air is circulated out of the heatsink into the inside of the case, but so does my RTX 2080 Ti as I can feel the heat being vented from the case when I play games on my RTX rig. Anyway, I wished I'd gotten two Red Devils instead of just one, but a side by side comparison between it and the reference VEGA 64 only serves to make me appreciate how much difference a good cooler makes.

Thank you very much!  At the moment, I'll be doing 1440p, though eventually I'm sure I'll bump up to 4k.  I think my air flow should be adequate, I'll have a 280mm Rad on the front of the case, two 140mm fans on the top, and 120mm fan on the back.

Thanks!  I really appreciate the advice, I think I'll get the Asus Strix Vega 56.  I'm going to try and be patient and see if any good deals pop up over Black Friday weekend.  But a wise man once said "do or do not, there is no try." haha.

because I'll be honest, based off of the last few years,  online - tech generally gets the sales before black friday now for lowest prices unless they are in store like at best buy on clearance

As it turns out, the Sapphire Nitro+ Vega 56 was on sale at Amazon for $500...so I just ordered it. (typically it's closer to $600) haha.  I'm so damn impulsive!  It really fit the aesthetic of my build, and ended up being about $50 or more cheaper the Asus Strix Vega 56.
