MemTest86 stuck at Test 9

Hey guys,

I bought a new CPU (i7 4790k) and somehow my Windows can't boot anymore.

It works fine with the old one (i5 4670).

A technician I adked about it told me to reinstall windows and test RAM with MemTest86.

I couldn't install it new because even .iso won't boot from USB stick correctly and I get a windows error message (every time a different one).

Do I now started the MemTest86 because in BIOS sometimes it just displayed 0MB instead of 16GB and somehow it stuck at 75% at 1/4 pass in test 9.

Can someone tell me what's the problem here?

I don't get it why it works fine with i5 and i7 not. A lot of people had the problem with the CPU - Mainboard (MSI Z87 G43) combination, but there must be a way to keep it running because the newest drivers support that CPU.

Thanks for any help.

You need a BIOS update to support devil's canyon

I WILL find your ITX build thread, and I WILL recommend the SIlverstone Sugo SG13B

Primary PC:

i7 8086k - EVGA Z370 Classified K - G.Skill Trident Z RGB - WD SN750 - Jedi Order Titan Xp - Hyper 212 Black (with RGB Riing flair) - EVGA G3 650W - dual booting Windows 10 and Linux - Black and green theme, Razer brainwashed me.

Draws 400 watts under max load, for reference.

How many watts do I needATX 3.0 & PCIe 5.0 spec, PSU misconceptions, protections explainedgroup reg is bad

Yeah, I tried version 1.7, 1.b, and the latest Beta. None works for far.

The guy I asked told me the old i5 CPU files on Windows make it impossible to boot.

I first need to reinstall windows... but how ?

Whoever this guy is...is giving wrong information. You DO NOT need to reinstall Windows if it is a CPU change, using same motherboard and socket type. Even all the motherboard drivers are the same.

Can you use CPU-Z ('Mainboard' tab) to verify the BIOS version programmed on to your motherboard?

I can only see it in BIOS because I can't boot Windows.

I'm running MemTest86 again and it's now fine in pass 3/4.

Okay, and BIOS properly shows 1.B (or whichever one you flashed) ?

Did you enable XMP, or running at defaults?

Did you reset your BIOS settings back to factory defaults?

If your i5-4670 is working even with the updated BIOS, then the problem is on the CPU side.

The i7-4790K could be defective, or the metal contact pad(s) on the bottom might be dirty, etc.

While you are at it, check the CPU socket for any bent/damaged pins.

In most cases, a CPU upgrade should be an easy swap-and-go.

Yes, BIOS shows the updated version on the top screen.

I reseted CMOS. I'm not sure how to enable XMP.

How can I reset BIOS to factory settings in Click BIOS 4?

CPU looks good and no pins at the socket are damaged.

Okay if you cleared the CMOS, then it should be running at default settings already.

XMP (eXteme Memory Profile) should be an option in the BIOS -- either under memory or the overclocking menu.

Yes, you should be able to reset the BIOS to factory settings in Click BIOS 4 (fancy name MSi uses for UEFI BIOS).

Wait...you are REINSTALLING Windows (7?) ??

Make sure you are using the USB 2.0 ports.

For older platforms, the USB 3.0 ports won't work properly without the USB 3.0 drivers.

It's a .iso and I want to upgrade later to 10.

Maybe should I try it with my Windows dvd?
