I got my laptop with the exact same ssd yesterday, this is how the score should look:

Have you tried installing samsung magician software?

Just bought this drive experiencing some speed anomalies

Probably SLC caching isn't enabled. I'm not sure if the PM981 works with Samsung's Magician software but if it does you need to enable TurboWrite.

Out of curiosity, why buy a PM981 instead of a 970 evo?

Buy whatever product is best for you, not what product is "best" for the market.

I love computer hardware and feel free to ask me anything about that (or phones). I especially like SSDs. But please do not ask me anything about Networking, programming, command line stuff, or any relatively hard software stuff. I know next to nothing about that.

Basically you SSD uses TLC (Triple Layer Cell) flash, which gives a lot higher storage density and is much cheaper than SLC (single Layer Cell) (you can have triple the capacity as SLC) but performance takes a hit (especially write performance). Samsung usually has a feature that makes some of the flash into SLC that acts as a cache so that when you write to the drive it gets filled up first.

Your write speeds look like what I'd expect if SLC caching wasn't enabled... usually I think there's a setting in Magician for that but unfortunately since it's a PM drive it's considered OEM and isn't supported by Magician.

You could try updating the NVMe driver through Windows but idk what else you could do.
