edit: but then it’s a 65W TDP chip and I don’t think it’ll cool properly on the current Mac mini form factor.

Yeah, that would have been nice. However it seems like Apple is aiming the Mac Mini towards basic home computing and data ingestion points. Both of which don’t require massive GPU prowess. 

 

eGPUs are an option though not really practical

What's wrong with thunderbolt enclosures for GPUs? The 8700 has 16 lanes of PCIE so it shouldn't gimp out like some laptops.

Was tempted by the idea of a new MacBook Air, but not with the price it is here in Australia. $1,849... Which is just an insult. But saying that, when you convert it to USD it works out to be the same price with our sales tax, which is incorporated into the price. But still!

The thing is I got quite some discounts buying this macbook pro. With student discount and australian GST refund, I'm paying around AU $2900 for the base model. It's also not for me, but for my sibling which means if I return it and then buy it outside of australia, I have to pay another AU $500 for the macbook pro.

dont try to compare macbook pricing with the normal 1080P laptops. Try to compare them to the surface lineup and you'll see that the high end laptop prices are pretty much similar

Well many can be great with a mouse but for most doing photo editing seriously you're going to be using a Wacom tablet, not saying that no one does but i don't know anyone either that incorporates an ipad into their work.

The iPad Pro in its current form is used to supplement a PC, rather than completely replace it. I know actual artists who transfer their files to the iPad Pro and work on them when they dont want to sit at a desk to do it or when they want to bring the work somewhere else.

My sister who does art major actually bought an ipad pro a year ago since at times she needs to do some outdoor work and it's not practical or possible in the first place to use laptop and a high-end wacom cintiq tablet.

 

Now that I'm getting her a macbook pro, she can actually use that ipad as a graphic tablet with the astropad studio

I'm actually at my college right now and I see a lot of people who are on their 2018 iPad or iPad pro and they use apple pencil to take their notes most of the time.

 

Everyone is going digital with everything, hence tablet still has a purpose, albeit a more niche market than the first time when it came out

I'll be damned, they actually changed to the USB-C port, I was nearly certain they weren't going to do this...  I'm impressed to be honest. It seems to be 'reasonably' priced for what it is, the new Photoshop capabilities should appeal to those in the design field. I think the bezels are a little larger than I would have liked but the new way to charge the pencil and the improved keyboard design is good.

 

To be honest, this iPad is probably the most innovative design in a while from Apple, some pretty big changes there. It seems like they have a revitalised interest in device to device compatibility which is nice too. Maybe they are genuinely concerned with Microsoft's offerings in the tablet/notebook market, either way it's good to see some new ideas for a change.

I would have preferred the lightning port for charging and the USB-C as an IO.

I would have preferred the lightning port for charging and the USB-C as an IO.

Think they liked the simplicity of a single port (that and there's only so much space), but decided that USB-C's advantages were just too strong for the iPad's intended role to ignore.

It’s possible next year. But USB-C is a bigger connector overall and Apple might stick with lighting just for that.
