What can utilize a USB3.1 port? what are you using it for?

looking at speed of 10Gbps, I wonder what should I do with it? 

storage drive? how large and how fast should it be.... not cost efficient...

 

what is the purpose of the USB3.1 and what could really take advantage of it?

(I remembered I had a usd3.0 mobo 6 years ago, died and didnt have any usb3.0 devices lol)

well much like usb 3 nothing is really going to hit the theoretical max limit of 10gbps , but even if it did that's only 1.25 gigabyte per second so it'll still take a while to move say a whole hdd over the connection.

It's more of if you have a 3.1 device that can utilize it somehow (external HDD,USB etc)
Most of the times mouses can have problems if you place them on 3.1 rather than 2.0. That's why even 2018 laptop/pc models has 2.0 port

One use could be capture cards (frame grabbers) that grab 4K 4:2:2 or full rgb/YCbCr 10bit at 60 fps, or resolutions higher than 4K... raw frames, most capture cards use hardware h264 or mpeg2 encoders to compress frames before sending them to the pc

 

Devices like epiphan av.io-4k usb frame grabber  record 4K 4:2:0 30fps and that needs around 3.5-4 gbps sustained : https://www.epiphan.com/products/avio-4k/tech-specs/

A 4K Full RGB image would be:   3840 x 2160 x 3 bytes per pixel = 24,883,200 bytes

30 fps would be 30 x 24,883,200 = 746,496,000 bytes - in bits, that's 5,971,968,000 bits

 

USB 3.1 encodes data going through the cables in 128b/132b - for every 128bits of actual data, 132 bits are sent.

 

So to send 30 frames of 4K full rgb image you need 5,971,968,000 / 128 x 132 = 6,158,592,000  or 6.1 gbps

 

That capture card from epiphan can capture 4K at 30fps because it captures in YCbCr 4:2:0 mode - this mean it takes groups of 4 pixels and computes an average of color information for these 4 pixels and sends the average instead of the color info for each of the 4 pixels. So instead of sending 4 pixels x 3 bytes = 12 bytes, it sends  4 x Y + 1 x Cb + 1 x Cr = 6 bytes.  (or something like that, i may be a bit wrong here)

 

So ... 3840 x 2160 / 4 pixels in a group x 6 bytes per group of 4 pixels x 30 fps = 12,441,600 x 30 = 373,248,000  or 2,985,984,000 bits  ... with 128b/132b encoding that's 3,079,296,000 bits for video alone , or ~3.1 gbps

 

Add 0.1 gbps for audio, and around 0.2 gbps in overhead and other stuff, and you have a capture card that uses around 3.5 gbps sustained to transfer raw 4K 30fps 4:2:0

 

If you want to capture 10bit per color, that raises the amount of bits by around 20% ... if you want to capture 4:4:4 or 4:2:2 instead of 4:2:0 (which can be bad for text and flat stuff like windows applications) than you need more bandwidth.

 

Like I said, amateur and amateur+ capture cards use hardware encoders to perform lossy compression, taking such 4K capture down to around 200 mbps - but sometimes you want raw frames, perfectly crystal clear without compression artefacts.

Mine is not doing much now, but i'm thinking about getting a new USB hub that is compatible with it.

Gaming and HTPC (reparations)- ASUS 1080, MSI X99A SLI Plus, 5820k- 4.5GHz @ 1.25v, asetek based 360mm AIO, RM 1000x, 16GB memory, 750D with front USB 2.0 replaced with 3.0  ports, 2 250GB 850 EVOs in Raid 0 (why not, only has games on it), some hard drives

Screens- Acer preditor XB241H (1080p, 144Hz Gsync), LG 1080p ultrawide, (all mounted) directly wired to TV in other room

Stuff- k70 with reds, steel series rival, g13, full desk covering mouse mat

All parts black

Workstation(desk)- 3770k, 970 reference, 16GB of some crucial memory, a motherboard of some kind I don't remember, Micomsoft SC-512N1-L/DVI, CM Storm Trooper (It's got a handle, can you handle that?), 240mm Asetek based AIO, Crucial M550 256GB (upgrade soon), some hard drives, disc drives, and hot swap bays

Screens- 3  ASUS VN248H-P IPS 1080p screens mounted on a stand, some old tv on the wall above it. 

Stuff- Epicgear defiant (solderless swappable switches), g600, moutned mic and other stuff. 

Laptop docking area- 2 1440p korean monitors mounted, one AHVA matte, one samsung PLS gloss (very annoying, yes). Trashy Razer blackwidow chroma...I mean like the J key doesn't click anymore. I got a model M i use on it to, but its time for a new keyboard. Some edgy Utechsmart mouse similar to g600. Hooked to laptop dock for both of my dell precision laptops. (not only docking area)

Shelf- i7-2600 non-k (has vt-d), 380t, some ASUS sandy itx board, intel quad nic. Currently hosts shared files, setting up as pfsense box in VM. Also acts as spare gaming PC with a 580 or whatever someone brings. Hooked into laptop dock area via usb switch

Even a 4 way raid-0 of HDDs wouldn't manage to saturate a USB 3.1 10Gbps port. Yeah.

I specifically spent $30 more for the USB 3.1 variant mainly for future proofing, and for the possibility of getting a higher transfer speed.

I had an unused USB 3.1 port, so I might as well use it.

this would be a viable thing to have if companies like synology would include the port on their NAS
