PSU Tier List 2.1 - LEGACY

Pure Power 10 under 400W is missing but it was Tier 5 in the previous list. What's the difference exactly? Just checked the prices and 400W is 50% more expensive than 300W. Worth paying to be safe even for office PCs with like 200W consumption?

I forgot to add it back.

It's Tier 5 as before.

Any consideration to Warranty go in to the tier list?
I think PSUs in Tier 2 should have at least 5 years warranty to qualify. Maybe minimum 7 years for Tier 1 as well.

For example the BeQuiet Pure Power 10 (tier 2) is a fine budget unit, and is fairly reasonably priced in a lot of European countries, but with only 3 year warranty is a bit of a deal breaker for me no matter the quality of the unit...

Tier 2 (GQ)

  • Corsair - Most RM variants, HX (old), CX grey (450/550 only have one PCIE)

FYI the CX550 has 2 PCIe connectors. It's only the CX450 that has only one.
Also, why is the CX450 in Tier 2 when the CXm range is tier 3? And aren't there two different platforms used for the CX range? Great Wall and CWT?

CPU: Intel i7 6700k  | Motherboard: Gigabyte Z170x Gaming 5 | RAM: 2x16GB 3000MHz Corsair Vengeance LPX | GPU: Gigabyte Aorus GTX 1080ti | PSU: Corsair RM750x (2018) | Case: BeQuiet SilentBase 800 | Cooler: Arctic Freezer 34 eSports | SSD: Samsung 970 Evo 500GB + Samsung 840 500GB + Crucial MX500 2TB | Monitor: Acer Predator XB271HU + Samsung BX2450

I disagree, I'd take 3 years of, say, EVGA or Corsair warranty over 5 years of ASUS warranty. It has never factored in before and IMO should not now, if 7 years was a minumum for T2 then TXm and Formula would be T3 which is a gross misrepresentation.

Except that puts it with inferior PSUs just because of warranty, motherboards and GPUs have short warranties, why have issues with PSUs that have short warranties as well. Regardless, the Pure Power 11 is being refreshed soon with a switch to gold and 5 years warranty, so it'll be a moot point.

CX uses a very different design utilizing a modern half bridge LLC resonant conversion topology, I agree that it doesn't belong in T2, but it's also above T3, IMHO T3 should become T4 (and T4 become T5 etc), and new T3 should be units like the CX non-M, Pure Power 10 etc...

If not, it belongs more in T2 than T3, esp since the CXm was only T3 because of the fan...

Can I ask why there is a differentiation in the EVGA G2 and P2/T2 PSUs? Are the G2 units lower quality? Or is the only factor there their efficiency? Because I don't think efficiency is a factor in the PSUs quality/reliability.

(side note the G2 has an "eco mode" switch on the back, which would make up whatever tiny difference in power consumption over time there would be between them (I'm assuming the P2 and T2 units have this too though so that kind of negates this side note, but the main point still stands))

Who knows what OP thinks factor towards quality.

Quality/reliability wise, the EVGA G2 is very good, with the only flaws being out-of-spec hold up time for the 550W variant, and not top notch soldering.

And as usual with EVGA/Super Flower power supplies the OPP is set rather high.

The qualifiable or quantifiable data that give a power supply reliability and longevity. Efficiency is not the same as quality.a PSU could not even be certified 80+ but could still be very high quality. Now the chances of this are basically non-existent, since that's a terrible idea, but I think you get the point. What I'm saying is that if the only difference between the G2 and P2/T2 units is the efficiency, then they should be the same tier, be it 1a or 1b. People know the difference in efficiency and what it means when purchasing a PSU. It's a pretty easy system to understand. So buying the efficiency rating of your choice is just that... a choice. Whether or not the PSU is soldered well is not a choice.

That said, I was kind of expecting a response from the OP, as he is the one who is making the list.

You misunderstood my point.

OP should list everything they take into consideration when tiering PSUs, so the audience understand what their getting from each tier and for credibility.

ATM they note something about group regulation, and fan bearing than can determine tier. But we both know there's way more to a power supply than that.

There isn't really a difference.

P2 T2 are the Platinum/Titanium Versions of the G2.

No, you misunderstand it.

That is for the fan, fan not running isn't really something worth talking about...

That's usually something like 50mA so that times 12 equals something around 600milliwatt....

Ok, fan aside, my point remains. If the quality is no different, then the quality is no different. 80+ is a rating of efficiency, not quality.

?

I agree, the 80+ rating should not directly affect the tier assigned a psu.

80+ ratings certify electrical efficiency. Not quality.

4

mm no because I think warranty doesn't cover normal wear and tear. Besides not all services are the same and in 7 years chances are your PSU will be incompatible with new stuff anyway.

People still have no idea what factors you’re looking at when tiering. You need to list them.

And Corsair CXM is rifle bearing, not sleeve.

Which means it’s equal quality to EVGA G3?!?!

CXm usually has a sleeve bearing. Some newer ones do have rifle bearings, but not all of them.

Apparently, the CXM actually uses a rifle bearing fan, according to the BOM.

@jonnyGURU posted about it in another thread and stated they were Rifle bearing fans and that the information listed on the website was wrong.

Actually, CX and CX-M both have rifle bearing fans.  The advantage of CX over CX-M is that CX is LLC and CX-M is double forward.

I know.

Cybenetics got the info from the Corsair website and, as usual, the Corsair website is wrong.

I even believed it was sleeve until I checked the BOM.  Hong Hua doesn't even make regular sleeve bearing fans anymore.  Failure rate was too high.

@Corsair Nick might need to get the website team to update the info for the CXm product range! The incorrect information is making people believe the product is worse than it actually is.
