AMD misses Q3 expectations, revenue still grows 40% compared to last year

PS, a little story. I once had some free shares in a Bank, you got them for opening an account (when the bank went private or something customers got free shares as they were "investors" etc). I decided I wanted to pay of my smallish CC bill. So I sold them up. At the same time I was working in an office for a (different) Bank owned company. Everyone said "buy buy buy, the market is doing fantastic, buy buy buy! Your crazy for not buying and for selling now!". I did not care, I wanted a little bill paid off, and personally I have no interest or trust in shares/prices.

 

So, I sell up. A few months/about a year later, what happens? The bank I had shares in goes bankrupt. Like, the only one to do so in decades. Literally shares were worthless. I dodged that one. :D

 

Oh, and the shares in the company I worked for? A year or two later, the share price had gone from over £4 each, to about 3p each... and almost went bankrupt (this one was big enough for the Government to stop that in the background quietly, though not secretly). Now? The share prices never bounced back up that high ever again (they divided the shares actually, they were over £12!!! but cut into 3 or 4 IIRC, but even allowing for that, never got back up to those giddy heights). The only saving grace would be if I did buy through work/payslip investment, I could cash out at any point for my original cash investment value without any interest, so it was impossible to lose my own cash (work would take their shares back at their cost, for them to get future gains/losses).

 

So I dodged two obviously aimed at me bullets that everyone was so sure would turn out to be candy... Yeah, I don't trust shares or advice on buying/selling. ?

good to see ryzen and epyc selling,  Makes me wonder how much their GPU division is leaching them though.

Grammar and spelling is not indicative of intelligence/knowledge.  Not having the same opinion does not always mean lack of understanding.

They do not make laptops with good iGPUs like they have put in intels CPUs. If they had done it much more people would have bought laptops with that AMD CPUs, including myself. They have only vega 10, vega 8 and vega 6 iGPU in laptops, but they gave intel Radeon RX Vega M GH and Radeon RX Vega M GL with 24 and 20 compute units. Their most powerfull iGPU in their own cpu is VEGA 11 with 11 compute units (704 shaders). Thats less then half of RX Vega M GH specs.

Computer users fall into two groups:
those that do backups
those that have never had a hard drive fail.

Because AMD doesn't have access to the same technology and R&D funds. You can't make something you don't have. 

 

And no, it probably wouldn't have done all that much. Performance isn't the problem.

40% more revenue than last year?! THAT'S FREAKING GREAT!

nvidia, intel, amd they are all down, and it's not only in tech that stocks are down. You should consider there could be other factors (external) affecting amd stock prices.

You do know Vega 8 is much faster than Intel iGPU as it is? Only a very select few SKUs with Iris Pro are as good.

Ryzen 7 2700U is only faster than above which is already better than Intel laptop iGPUs. Vega M GH and Vega M GL aren't actually that good, better off going with a proper dGPU if you want more than light gaming, fast but not better than that type of configuration.

Yeah but AMD is doing great and  Zen2 rumors are great and Intel is sucking

Ryzen 7 2700U is only faster than above which is already better than Intel laptop iGPUs. Vega M GH and Vega M GL aren't actually that good, better off going with a proper dGPU if you want more than light gaming, fast but not better than that type of configuration.

 

Yeah, for the price you pay for KBL-G you could get a 6 core CFL and dedicated graphics in some form.

KBL-G is essentially last gen tech spliced together (4 core KBL + Polaris/Vega hybrid graphics).

well there is still vega 12 which i have a feeling we will be hearing about very soon, with that one amd can compete with the Vega M quite well while allowing for more changes as it is a separate gpu, and from what we have seen it clocks quite high for a gcn gpu (almost 2Ghz), next round of info will come out in the 6th (might not be gpu related) (on the server panel amd will do)

Revenue is up. And well, they can't really afford to fight full on on more fronts so they focused on CPU side for start and GPU next. 7nm will be very important for them.

With all due respect, shares fell for a reason: There's almost no way for AMD to have lived through a better situation with intel struggling with 10nm production (allegedly, but still) and still on the tail of meltdown and spectre (a little bit anyways) and AMD wasn't able to raise up a lot more.

 

I think their stock took a step back precisely because investors feel this is as good as it's going to get for AMD and intel really just needs to not stick their foot up their ass anymore to maintain their commanding lead, maybe even expand it with a few dirty tricks (And we all know they have fucking plenty of those)

There was a massive market sell off yesterday. All Stock Market gains in 2018 were erased yesterday.

that really only happened at the very end of the quarter so its impact is probably small, and we are getting back to that time where people start waiting for zen 2, and black Friday

With all due respect, shares fell for a reason: There's almost no way for AMD to have lived through a better situation with intel struggling with 10nm production (allegedly, but still) and still on the tail of meltdown and spectre (a little bit anyways) and AMD wasn't able to raise up a lot more.

 

I think their stock took a step back precisely because investors feel this is as good as it's going to get for AMD and intel really just needs to not stick their foot up their ass anymore to maintain their commanding lead, maybe even expand it with a few dirty tricks (And we all know they have fucking plenty of those)

Can it happen? Sure, anything can happen. Is it likely? Likely enough to put your money on it? Market speaks for itself on that one and the answer is likely no: Not without AMD getting a major win or intel having another major blunder.

in a few months amd will be launching a 64 core 128 thread monster on 7nm, and intel will have nothing to compete against it, and for amd that cpu wont be that expensive, on the consumer market it will be a bit harder but still 7nm is their silver bullet

That's a good point: we know at least Oracle seems to think so, others will probably follow.

But even then I still have my reservations: enterprise market is extremely slow to change, even if major players are placing bets on AMD it's going to take a while for the tide to turn so to speak.

true, even now epyc 1 is still ramping, but intel really is in trouble with 10nm, and amd being so much smaller they don't need many to move over to fulfill their sales capacity, when we look at opteron it took around a full year before sales really took off, and at the end they got quite a lot of market share, so they should be able to repeat that, epyc 2 should mean that even intel's 4 cpu servers will be in big danger, the premise of a single socket server will be even better and clocks should be a bit higher for the lower core count parts which is important for some workloads, a 250w part would also be a good addition for those workloads that need faster cores
