AMD misses Q3 expectations, revenue still grows 40% compared to last year

So, maybe this won't come as much of a shock to you depending on whether you've kept track of recent market trends. 

 

Alongside weak GPU sales from the Radeon side, the market downtrend seems to have hit AMD quite a bit alongside the missed expectations, causing their share price to plunge by as much as 22.5% at one point.

Advanced Micro Devices saw its stock price plummeted as much as 22.5 percent in after-hours trading, after it reported third-quarter revenues that were slightly less than what the market expected and forecast conservative growth for the fourth quarter.

 

AMD’s stock fell along with much of the broader market, which was down about 3 percent today based on concerns about the economy.

 

AMD grew revenues 40 percent to $1.65 billion in the third quarter, compared to the same quarter a year ago. But analysts had expected slightly more revenue of $1.7 billion. AMD saw weaker graphics processing units (GPUs) sales, as AMD’s graphics chips aren’t as competitive as rival Nvidia’s. Also, GPUs related to blockchain mining evaporated in the quarter, while it was a single-digit percentage of revenue a year earlier. Blockchain-based cryptocurrencies have seen diminishing returns from mining, prompting fewer graphics card sales

But there is some optimism in this.

But AMD CEO Lisa Su said in a conference call that she believes AMD is gaining market share, thanks to growing traction for its Zen-based processors, which have advantages over rival Intel.

“We remain focused on executing our strategy and delivering our product leadership,” Su said.

In particular, she said that AMD’s Epyc chips, which are based on the Zen architecture, could grab mid-single digit server unit share by year end. She also said that in the longer time, AMD can grab double-digit unit market share. She said 50 percent of revenue is coming from new products. Currently, the stock is down 18.6 percent at $18.55 a share.

Su said there was a shift in revenue mix. She had expected client business would be strong, with Ryzen-based laptop chip sales and server chips growing. Graphics performed well in data center customers, but GPU sales were weak in the channel. Su said 54 new laptops are debuting with AMD chips. Client processor average selling price was up during the quarter.

 

The Enterprise, Embedded, and Semi-Custom segment revenue was down 5 percent at $715 million. The semi-custom chip business is down mostly due to the game console chip sales, which are expected to decline because the consoles are in their sixth year of sales, Su said.

Looks like there should be greener pastures ahead.

Given market trends, I don't find this too surprising. AMD's rivals, Intel and NVIDIA have also been on a significant downturn alongside the 4% decline in the NASDAQ due to market concerns from the USA/China trade war amongst other concerns. 

 

With all that said, it seems that RTG is the current weak spot in AMD's lineup. Whilst Zen is doing pretty well (with Zen 2 looking to be on track for its 2019 release), RTG's results have been less rosy. 

 

Let's hope future RTG products are more competitive with their Green Team counterparts.

They'll probably go back up soon. 

 

A lot of the decline is attributed to market conditions. NVIDIA's stock is down by nearly 10%, for example

Between RAM prices, RTX being RTX, and 7nm on the horizon, right now seems like an awful time to be building a whole new PC. I'd imagine that 2H next year will be pretty incredible for them, especially if Navi is halfway decent (a big if).

 

And even if it isn't, if Nvidia manages to rush out a 7nm Turing followup I could see a whole lot of people building new systems from the ground up, and it seems like Zen 2 is going to be the no brainer platform to build around (assuming no major delays or unforseen launch issues).

That's just how wall street works. Reported revenue is a couple percent lower than expected? Stock plummets.

 

Naturally you and I can tell that this is kinda dumb seeing as it's still a huge improvement over last year, and AMD has a lot of cool stuff on the horizon.

It will rebound. A lot of the decline is due to the market downturn.

 

Hence why now's generally a good time to buy as it will rebound anyhow, especially if and when Zen 2 launches and meets projected expectations in terms of performance and competitiveness.

Missing expectations is not the end of the world. What do market analysts know anyway? You could guess and probably be right 50% of the time. The important thing is that revenue is up!

As an AMD stock holder, i'm REALLY worried about tomorrow. Tomorrow Intel announces their earnings. If they beat and they announce 10nm is out next week or whatever, AMD is going to go even further red.
I'm really banking on the rumors being true that Intel has abandoned 10nm and they will officially announce it tomorrow which will send AMD up.

Intel is nowhere near mass production of 10nm yet btw, they will not be announcing its release in an earnings call.

They haven't been in the red. They've been deeper and deeper in the black for the most part of this year. Unless you mean stock price, which will probably go back up considering the company's roadmap

I can't remember a time when AMD CPUs and GPUs do well at the same time...  I feel like the company has a history of running on 2 wheels at a time

Lmfao they’re just going to announce that 10nm is out next week? ?.. that’s the sort of thing that gets announced like a year in advance (projections -> we’re tracking to timelines).

$18/share? Does anyone else think this is a golden buying opportunity or am I just crazy? Crypto sales accounted for like 5-6% of total AMD revenue. I did not see anything too terrible in the earnings report besides lowered guidance next quarter. The fact that the apparent crypto bust impacted the stock close to 30% in 1 day seems crazy to me.
