Need more VRAM on a tight budget.

Despite being 2 generations old my GTX980 is still serving me fine - I can run games on ultra or high at 1080p and still get 60FPS in most games. However I keep hitting the vram limitation quite early in games, and they slow to a stutter after a while due to all the swapping that keeps happening. I don't game as much as I used to so I can't really justify spending so much cash when I still get great performance from my hardware. 

 

I was thinking of looking at the used market and getting a 980TI or a 1060 6GB. Both are going for around £170. Any suggestions?

 

Rest of system are: i7 4790K, 16GB DDR3, Asrock Pro 4 Z97, samsung 850 256GB SSD, 2x 1080p displays

980ti all the way. It's faster

980Ti is about GTX1070 level of performance, so that's a no brainer.

1060 is a side grade at best so definitely 980 ti. You should try lowering AA in games though that could help with vram.

You could try turning down AA and shadow quality. Dropping texture quality one tic would probably do it too. I would be curious which games these are and what settings you are using. You shouldn't have much trouble keep Vram usage under 4gb at 1080p.

how much ram are you using? what are you capping at? i cannot imagine needing more then 4-6 gigs of ram really. RX580 8 gigs are always there, but for what you had before a 1070 or 980ti (if you can find one in good shape) should really work well
