PSU Tier List V3 pre-launch thread

Sure... I can redo it off the existing list, but I lack the technical knowledge to be able to reclassify things and move them between the tiers.

Just let me know if you want a multi-level bullet point list (good for adding comments about individual PSUs, but a bit lengthier), or if you want the single level bullet point list with all models are on the same line for that manufacturer (shorter, but less room for adding comments about individual units and more cluttered)

Single Level List Example (like the current list, but with links)

Multi Level List Examples (Each series gets its own line)

or with the links directly next to the model name looks pretty tidy too...

Also the numbering for links can either be numbers or names of review outlets for the review, ie

Happy to do whatever you guys want. If anyone else has any suggestions for layout let me know.

Let's leave the tiers as they are for now, those can change later. Of those formatting options I like the first one the most since it's the least intrusive, but we need to find a place to put special notes

Edit : I think actually we should go with the 2nd option to make notes clearer

I've got an idea...
Post the notes as a reply to the thread that includes the message that you want to note, as well as any supporting links to articles etc (such as G3 protection issues note). Then just link to that reply in the PSU tier list

What are peoples thoughts so far on having links to review articles in the list?

Here's an example of what it might look like:

Quote

Tier 1 - Best

  • be Quiet! - Dark Power Pro P10, Dark Power Pro 11 [1] [2], Straight Power 11 [1]
  • Bitfenix - Whisper [1] [2] [3]
  • Cooler Master - V-series [1], MasterWatt Maker [1] [2]
  • Corsair - AX, AXi [1] [2] [3], HXi [1] [2], RMi [1] [2] [3], RMx [1], SF, HX (2017 grey label) [1] [2], TXM (2017 750W)

Do you like the idea of having the review links next to the models like that or do you think it makes it look too messy/cluttered?

CPU: Intel i7 6700k  | Motherboard: Gigabyte Z170x Gaming 5 | RAM: 2x16GB 3000MHz Corsair Vengeance LPX | GPU: Gigabyte Aorus GTX 1080ti | PSU: Corsair RM750x (2018) | Case: BeQuiet SilentBase 800 | Cooler: Arctic Freezer 34 eSports | SSD: Samsung 970 Evo 500GB + Samsung 840 500GB + Crucial MX500 2TB | Monitor: Acer Predator XB271HU + Samsung BX2450

I think that's good and not too cluttered, though you might want to do it something like

Tier 2

 - Seasonic - Focus+ Gold [1, 2 ,3 ] to have only 1 subscript thing per item or even do it like Seasonic - Focus+ Gold [TH TH JG]

The issue I have with tier lists is it’s too subjective. There are too many factors being clumped together. It is possible a ‘tier 3’ PSU would be a better option for the reader than a “tier 1” PSU, depending on their scenario and preferences.

Its why we don’t see any tier lists for cars.

What I think would work better is scoring in different areas - Voltage reg, ripple, protections, EMI, component quality, etc.

although that would take more effort, it would allow for unbiased criteria a PSU must meet to deserve its score. ATM PSUs are being tiered on someone’s gut-feeling.

IMO the best option is to class them into "value Categories".

And add all that are good to that and rate them less...

I was never a fan of the PSU Tier list as it stands right now.
I'd rather see a list of PSUs with individual reviews linked to it and the scores of those reviews attached to them.

I don't even see any restrictions that would define a tier. For me it's basically pointless information that might just lead to more confusion and misinformation than anything else.

PSU TIERS are for beginners, not for experienced people.

If you know about PSUs you know where the reviews are and how to get to them. Adding the review links wouldn't be a bad idea at all though.

I agree So we might want to consider moving from "Tiers" to "recommended" "good unit" "decent unit" and and maybe the "not recommended/avoid" and "avoid at all cost".

In the last category we should put something like EVGA BT and Seasonic S12II Series and concentrte on the bigger ones...

4

Yup that's way more understandable for people that are new to PSUs.

Bc they observe tier 6 and they don't know wether it's good or not

Read this as "Vague Categories".

Eh, close enough.

Accuracy isn't a strong point for tier lists which is why they're often a point of contention. Tier lists bypass nuance and make it easier to draw a clear distinction when it's difficult to do so in order to save time.

Due to all the factors that determine what tier a psu ends up being in, an explanation of how they're being weighted and why they're in a certain tier might help but it's also an easy way to create a cluttered mess.

If you ever need help with a build, read the following before posting: http://linustechtips.com/main/topic/3061-build-plan-thread-recommendations-please-read-before-posting/

There still comes the problem of ever-varying prices, and how each user values different aspects.

Perhaps a list of popularly available power supplies, and provide examples to when each one could be considered.

Yes it is, that is why you can write something like:
If a PSU of a higher category happens to cost less, it is to be prefered.

You wouldn't want a Xilence Performance X 550 when you can have either a Cougar GX-F for the same price.

You wouldn't want a Cougar GX-F if you can get a Bitfenix Whisper M for the same price.

You wouldn't want any CWT GPS based unit, when you can get a Corsair RMx for the same price...

But the problem is:
How do you classify a Xilence Performance X?
Entry Gold? electrical performance is quite good and IIRC better than a be quiet Straight Power E10 or many other Entry gold levels. Combined with an awesome fan controller (and a low noise fan). But component choice/build quality is to be cheap. And 3 Years Warranty (after registration)

Wich is kindawhat I had in mind ?

Another way to do it is by Wattage, and here I'd use 3 categorys:

400-550W

650-850W

1000W and above.

And then categorize it by desirability of a PSU.

PS: You see that I really like the Performance X. Because its about the same price as the Corsair CX but better, except the choice of components...

That would depend if you prefer a little better electrical performance + efficiency and noise, or a PSU that may last you a couple years longer.

too bad you couldnt make a browser add-on that adds a ltt tier number and eliminates psus not on the list

which can be turned on and off with a click and you could use price/color/etc to search

Write the tier list on somewhere that isn't a forum post. Like Google Docs or OneDrive. Add a few people that you trust to edit the document.

Means if the OP ever buggers off the forum the tier list will live on. Probably what should have been done in the beginning imo.

Our Grace. The Feathered One. He shows us the way. His bob is majestic and shows us the path. Follow unto his guidance and His example. He knows the one true path. Our Saviour. Our Grace. Our Father Birb has taught us with His humble heart and gentle wing the way of the bob. Let us show Him our reverence and follow in His example.
