PSU Tier List V3 pre-launch thread

orbitalbuzzsaw

Not really sure where to put this but given that the PSU Tier List is a fixture here I guess it belongs here

Now that @STRMfrmXMN is "Permanently Logged Off" we're going to need a new PSU Tier List since it will be impractical/impossible to maintain the current one.

Placeholder thread is already live https://linustechtips.com/main/topic/986000-placeholder-power-supply-tier-list-revised/

This is the prelaunch discussion thread

I was never a fan of the PSU Tier list as it stands right now.
I'd rather see a list of PSUs with individual reviews linked to it and the scores of those reviews attached to them.

I don't even see any restrictions that would define a tier. For me it's basically pointless information that might just lead to more confusion and misinformation than anything else.

Many people don't and yet it's still a great resource. I'll work on finding a way to incorporate links to reviews into the new one, however. Suggestions are appreciated!

Green units have specific issues (such as the EVGA G3)

Currently there seems to be no Green listed? Unless this is because G3's were cleared of OTP/OPP issues

No, that's one of my additions. Units highlighted in green will have notes in the OP-but-one about specific issues. Blue units will be recommended in class such as the Focus+ Gold or RMx, or CX-M

Edit : As per suggestion of @seon123 the blue highlighting was removed for being a half assed idea in the first place

Yes. And you've colored blue such as the CXM but the G3 still shows "Default" colors

I don't think the post would become too long.

Usually, you come to the tier list with the intent to specifically search for a PSU and see whether its good to use or not and that can simply be done with the help of a browser's search bar.

You could put each manufacturer in spoilers? Similar to how the Whitelist was, IIRC.

Nah, better off avoiding spoilers for the PSU listings in my opinion just to make it easier to search.

  Reveal hidden contents

If you did a spoiler tag for every model of PSU, the list would be absolutely huge. Really don't need to show the full URL for the link either, you can use the link function in the editor to set any text as the link.

I still think if you're going to have review links, which is a good idea, to have them as just the name of the review outlet or some shortened initals for it with a link. Such as...

Quote

Tier 2

  • Seasonic
    • Focus Plus Gold                               [TH] [JG]                      [Note: Example of where you might write a note about a PSU]
    • Focus Plus Platinum                         [TH]

or if just using the numbers...

Quote

Tier 2

  • Seasonic
    • Focus Plus Gold                               [1] [2]                         [Note: Example of where you might write a note about a PSU]
    • Focus Plus Platinum                         [1]

Alternatively if you're not going with the multi-level bullet points, you could still do it like...

Quote

Tier 2

  • Seasonic - Focus Plus Gold [1] [2], Focus Plus Platinum [1]

Not necessary to go through and do review links for every PSU straight away, as that will take a very long time to add them all, but maybe just as new PSUs are listed and decided where to be placed links can be added, as well as the more popular items getting review links as well with it being expanded over time.

Yeah, probably start with review links for the most popular ones that get the most attention at first, such as those you mentioned, and then as new units are released you can include reviews for them as you add them to the list. As time goes on the list will expand and more and more things will have review links, and if people start asking questions about an existing PSU on the list you can add in reviews for it to update and expand the list.

Let me know if you want a hand rewriting or formatting the list and doing some of the review links. Send me a PM and let me know if there's anything you want a hand with.

Can you do the list itself and I'll rewrite the top and bottom bits?

Also I'm conisdering changing the rules so that nonmodularity of 550w and above units is cause for a max tier 3 like the fans, what do you think?

Now that @STRMfrmXMN is "Permanently Logged Off" we're going to need a new PSU Tier List since it will be impractical/impossible to maintain the current one.

Then why not make it better?

And sort it by Price structure of the manufacturer (ie High End, Mid Range, Low End, System Integrator/Avoid)

I was never a fan of the PSU Tier list as it stands right now.

Neither am I but we need some kind of List that helps most people...

I'd rather see a list of PSUs with individual reviews linked to it and the scores of those reviews attached to them.

You have to keep the amount of work in mind - and that there is already some kind of list, though didn't seem to get some work in the last couple of years for most units...

http://www.realhardtechx.com/index_archivos/PSUReviewDatabase.html

But that's something for another project...

I don't even see any restrictions that would define a tier. For me it's basically pointless information that might just lead to more confusion and misinformation than anything else.

I agree So we might want to consider moving from "Tiers" to "recommended" "good unit" "decent unit" and and maybe the "not recommended/avoid" and "avoid at all cost".

In the last category we should put something like EVGA BT and Seasonic S12II Series and concentrte on the bigger ones...

Just a list of links next to some units is I think what we've settled on

Sure... I can redo it off the existing list, but I lack the technical knowledge to be able to reclassify things and move them between the tiers.

Just let me know if you want a multi-level bullet point list (good for adding comments about individual PSUs, but a bit lengthier), or if you want the single level bullet point list with all models are on the same line for that manufacturer (shorter, but less room for adding comments about individual units and more cluttered)

Single Level List Example (like the current list, but with links)

Quote

Tier 2

  • Seasonic - Focus Plus Gold [1] [2], Focus Plus Platinum [1]

Multi Level List Examples (Each series gets its own line)

Quote

Tier 2

  • Seasonic
    • Focus Plus Gold                               [1] [2]                         [Note: Example of where you might write a note about a PSU]
    • Focus Plus Platinum                         [1]

or with the links directly next to the model name looks pretty tidy too...

Quote

Tier 2

  • Seasonic
    • Focus Plus Gold [1] [2]                         [Note: Example of where you might write a note about a PSU]
    • Focus Plus Platinum [1]

Also the numbering for links can either be numbers or names of review outlets for the review, ie

Quote

Tier 2

  • Seasonic
    • Focus Plus Gold                               [Tom's Hardware] [JonnyGuru]                         [Note: Example of where you might write a note about a PSU]
    • Focus Plus Platinum                         [Tom's Hardware]

Happy to do whatever you guys want. If anyone else has any suggestions for layout let me know.
