Why are Quad M.2 Adapter only supporting HEDT boards?

Simple question, i dont get why i should not be able to put an ASrock or Asus Quad M.2 Adapter in the empty unused PCI x16 lane (single GPU).

 

That so many boards only support ~2 NVME currently is bothering me, and to aim for a Maximus Extreme or Gene only for the 4 NVME drive support seems wasteful and limiting to me.

 

Can somebody share insight why those adapters only work with HEDT boards? Much appreciated!

the need for PCIE lanes, it need 16 for the SSDS alone giving your GPU only 4 lanes on both desktop platform.

Might have something to do with HEDT processors actually having the PCIe lanes to handle a GPU or two along with Quad NVMe.

In theory you can use quad NVMe adapters on consumer boards in which the CPU only has 16 PCIe lanes, but you will be giving up the graphics card entirely just for the SSDs.

 

If you put the graphics card on, the NVMe adapter will run through the chipset which drops the transfer speeds, a LOT if you access all drives at the same time.

For example the crosshair vii has 2 PCIE 3.0 rated 16x each so should i not be able to sue one slot for gpu and one slot for quad m.2 adapters?

 

Edit: wait a sec, Ryzen 2700X only supports 20 lanes so the 32 advertised by asus can never be used?
