Is my PSU really faulty?

Petulak
 Share

Hi,

just wanted to make sure if my PSU is actually faulty. I have the Corsair VS650 650W (yeah..) and everything was fine with i7-3770k + 980ti until I upgraded to 1080ti. Did DDU reinstall but most of my games still keep crashing, happens mostly at powerspikes (when door in OW opens etc.). I usually get error messages "D3D device removed", "Graphics device removed" or some driver errors/BSODs. The PSU also sometimes makes high pitch/buzzing noise.

Anyway I underclocked my GPU by -100/-100 and crashing stopped and I have my eyes on mint Corsair RM750i, any other suggestions?

1000W EVGA  G3 for 100$. overwattaged, but good price.

That's a terrible price.

1520RPM at a 60W load, and up from there with increasing loads. Add to that the issues with the protections, and literally anything else looks like a much better deal.

You have absolutely no need for a 100W PSU. or even 850. Another 650 will be fine, and you'd probably be fine with a 550 also. Corsair RM series is good. Anything fully modular from Corsair is good. EVGA's G2/P2/T2 PSUs are very good as well. I have the 850W G2 and no complaints. It even looks good.

There is the EVGA 750W G2. It is the same price as the 650W, so no point in getting the lower wattage one.

Is anything in the system overclocked? If the CPU is overclocked, try running it at stock. And which 1080 Ti model is it?

If the PSU can't deliver enough power, it will shut down. That's what the UVP and OPP does. The PC isn't communicating with the PSU (other than telling it to turn on), so I don't think it's that likely that it's the PSUs fault that the system is crashing.

100$ for a 1kw 80+ gold is pretty good. 100$ is the cheapest give or take 5$. Not saying he needs 1kw, but its fine.

um. ?? Its fanless until the 50% test so at least 200W.

The 1kw G3 gets a 9.8 on JG with a 9.5 in price. if it dropped 50$, then it prob a 9.9

budget?

under 100$, EVGA GQ 850 (89.99), EVGA G2 850 (99.99)

but there is this:

https://pcpartpicker.com/product/JBzZxr/evga-supernova-g3-1000w-80-gold-certified-fully-modular-atx-power-supply-220-g3-1000

1000W EVGA  G3 for 100$. overwattaged, but good price.

EVGA is crap when compared to other manufacturers, especially the GQ is bad.

And why do you recommend things he does not even need?!
There are others that make more sense and that are cheaper. No need for 850 or even 1000W - well, if you want a rather loud system that is...

Semi Fanless is horse shit.

I have one of the worst implementation in a CWT made SFX unit that litterally lets the fan spin for a second, goes of for 2-3 seconds and then starts again. Yeah, great. I love it - NOT.

Its horse shit, that is only needed when you can't regulate the fan so far down that most people can live with it.

And 1000rpm with a 140x25mm fan is really quiet, absolute a good choice -- N O T...

Wich doesn't make it better.

He does not need that much Wattage, its wasted, makes the PC louder than necessary.

All he needs is a good quality unit, wattage is irrelevant.

So stop recommending things they don't need nor want!

1) NEVER BUY A PSU USED!

Because you loose all warranty claims with most manufacturers!

2) you probably don't need 750W and a good quality 550W is more than enough.

For example be quiet Straight Power 11, Cougar GX-F.

3) the PSU might not necessarily be faulty, "only" has issues with your setup, wich happens from time to time...

What are you getting for those ~$10-20 compared to a good 550W? A louder fan, more connectors, issues with its protections and unnecessary wattage. Nothing that adds value, but things that reduce the value.

And how long do they test at each load? Long enough for the unit to heat up?

Here's testing on Cybenetics.

I don't care about the score on Jonnyguru. In terms of electrical performance, it's excellent. If you want an in depth review, Aris has one on Tomshardware.

I worded that poorly, I meant suggestions about the crashing, component prices are outrageous in my country, they usually cost 50% more than what you recommend. I would just get something from the Tier 1/2 list, currently at Tier 6 :), conviniently the rm750i is there.

Nothing is overclocked, GPU is at -100/-100 (Inno3D iChill 1080ti X3). From googling some people solved their issues with new PSU so I assumed I should have the problem too since mine is being shitty. Shadow of Tomb Raider runs fine on 0/0 OC, but Overwatch would crash every 2 or 3 games, after -100/-100 OC I got to play 2 hours straight.
