Winamp 6 to return in 2019, it will still whip the llama's ass

Everyone forgot what Winamp was.

I highly doubt that, most people will be like "oh yeah, winamp, that was the best, I'm going to download it again."

Winamp hasn't been "the best" for ages. It wasn't even "the best" when it was still a thing at the end of its life. I'd know, I was using it. Especially when they started shoving a lot of promo garbage and services in it. I even made a total archive of their stuff before they removed it all: https://1drv.ms/f/s!AHVGCeUCIaGUh2s

As for MusicBee "who", it's MusicBee this: https://getmusicbee.com and it's an amazing music player. Has features for which you had to stuff Winamp with plugins. And has a 32bit output using WASAPI which is a real treat if you have a capable soundcard like AE-5. It's highly unlikely I'll go back to Winamp, especially not if they only plan on playing the nostalgia note and not actually getting it up to 2018/2019 levels.

Does this mean Napster is returning as well?

Hey now...

If we anger the aural gods, REAL-PLAYER might get resurrected with Netscape not far behind.???

I’m enjoying Foobar2000, VLC, and EAC.

I have good memories of Winamp but ended up leaving for Foobar2000 at some point. I don't remember when, but it might have been because it came on a CD in a cover slip once.

Today, Quod Libet and Fb2k definitely make up my local audio playback, with Spotify coming in for streaming. Good times, tough. Hope Winamp makes a serious go at re-entering the market.

Who?

Ikr.

I still use Winamp because its the only program to offer all the features I need.

Finding another player thay actually allowed me to select my audio output device was almost impossible.

That did not have other caviats.

I mean the only two I know of are Winamp and Windows Media Player. (AIMP might now?)

I'm keen as long as they do not remove advanced features to make it portable.

Who cares now MusicBee for the win. Seriously that program is amazing and the devs should team up with MusicBee instead of releasing a new Winamp.

Basically, what I am trying to say is that Winamp, today, has nothing special over current software currently available, why go through the complicate to switch, beside nostalgia, which you'll probably end up switching back to what you were using before. Nothing that was mentioned is anything unique to a basic music player... oh sorry, I missed something.. Winamp visualization... I guess now we will have the computer power to run all of them properly at 60fps. yay?!

But does it have skins? Remember those?

Spotify is a shitty solution for a nonexistant problem. It's like a shitty radio station, except worse.

You mean the radio station that constantly plays the song you want on demand in relatively high quality? It mostly solved music piracy and you know it

Relatively high quality?  You might as well listen to static.

Their collection is quite limited if you're not into mainstream.

You need to deal with geoblocking as well, something which is not a problem when you can just buy CDs abroad

And at the end of the month you have nothing to show for the $10 or so that you paid, whereas I'll still have that CD that I purchased with that money and can listen to it whenever I want for years or decades to come.  And when I'm done with it, I can at least make some of my money back by selling it.

My family can inherit my CD collection, good luck trying that with Spotify music or whatever songs you purchased on iTunes, Google Play, 7digital etc.

Everyone saying how awesome Spotify is... well, here is the state of Spotify for someone living in a freaking CENTRAL EUROPE in year 2018.

SpotifyAwesomeness.jpg.1bed0c3105014d550b2ff8686a1571c1.jpg

This is why I get extreme blood pressure every time anyone starts whining over piracy. They don't provide us services, but they sure as hell like to bitch about piracy on and on and on... And don't get me started how my Netflix for 9,99€ gets less content than for someone in US paying just $9,99 (because $ = € yo!), in a way it's a miracle I even have access to Netflix. Rambling again...

seriously cant remember whens the last time i listened to an mp3 file. spotify is way better. so unless they integrate that somehow i doubt im gonna use it.

but i am very curious what they do with the UI. the old one is way to cluttered for todays standards.

also winamp has always been free and seeing as some company bought it in 2014 and is now planning a new version next year im curious if they are gonna try and charge people for it. if so i predict they are gonna fall on their faces...HARD

Show of hands: who actually still keeps audio files on physical media in 2018? Seems to me that regardless of your choice of poison, all platforms, big to small, offer some form of audio streaming instead.

Also I keep some audio files locally: I thought I bring myself as an example of a rare exception to the rule since some audio and video files are exceedingly hard to find so there is literally no option to stream or buy digitally anywhere it's just physical media so of course I keep my back ups digitally and use those instead.
