Getting 2080ti, dunno if I should go 1440 Ultrawide for 4k, any insight?

Yes, it is.  4k is 3840x2160, Ultrawides are 2520x1080 or 3440x1440 or even 3840x1600.

Not yet, no.  Won't be much longer and we'll have a 5040 x 2160 or something with the 2080Ti as a mainstream card.  I'm betting a few will be announced at CES.

LG has one you can preorder.

HOWEVER , since thats a tad expensive.....

Since 3840 x 1600 can fit inside a 3840 x 2160 display, you CAN have both as i have stated already. Get urself a large 4k Monitor, then when u want to run ultra wide (3840 x 1600), u can do so by simply creating a custom resolution and disabling 'scaling' so that the image is not stretched.

That's not 4k ultrawide, even LG calls it 5k2k monitor.

You can make a case for "2160p Ultrawide" terminology but you can't take 4k pixels, make it 5k and still call it 4k.

You don't call 3440x1440 "2560p ultrawide", you call it 1440p ultrawide.

1080p is called 1080p .. 1440p is called 1440p ..2160p people tend to call 4k.

So 4k ultrawide is 5120x2160.

im just using the terminology most use, regardless of if its technicaly right or not..

In all honesty, i dont see why so many people have a hard time deciding between 4k 16:9 and 1440 ultra wide. You can get both in 1 monitor.

As i said in my last post, what ever size ultra wide you 'would' get, just grab a 4k 16:9 that is 2" bigger and you can then have BOTH.

If you want to play in 1440p ultra wide u set the resolution to 144op ultra wide, if u then want to play 4k 16:9 u just go back to native.

Even i do this on my 42" Plasma (my PC screen), its only 1920 x 1080, but when i want to play with a wider aspect i set the res to 1920 x 820 , and if i want i can turn on 4x DSR (3840x1640)

Isnt this just going to stretch your image vertically though to fill the entire screen?
Anyways im intrested in this LG display..or a later one with Gsync its giving me the best, 4k 16:9 if something doesnt have UW support and 1440 UW if something is just too hard to power at 4/5k

No it wont stretch. Thats why im sugesting it.

All you need do is create the custom resolution and disable image scaling. This stop it from stretching in the image, resulting in a proper aspect ratio for the resoultion ur using.

Thus a say 40" 4k 16:9 monitor can display a 38" 21:9 image. So u get both in 1 screen.

You can try it now on what ever screen ur currently using. So if ur using 1080p screen create a custom resat 1920x820, then disable image scaling.

For Nvidia GPU's u do this by going to the Nvidia control panel, click on change resoultion, then click customize, create custom resolution, input the new resolution, test and save. if it is stretching the image then go to 'adjust desktop size and position' - scaling - check no scaling.

The reason I tell people to go one or the other is based on actual desk size and screen size to reso.  I don't have room for a 40" 16:9 on my desk, nor do most people I would say.  That's a wall mount or a very deep desk to sit at an appropriate distance away. The whole UW argument for me is that it's wider but not taller, so it fits the actual rectangle of sight.

Also, price per size is a factor.  As well as resolution fitting properly.  You're producing a 21:9 ratio on a 16:9 screen, so you'll have black bars on the top and bottom which is why we went 16:9 in the first place, so the image fits the screen properly.  Otherwise we'd still be using 4:3 and image scaling all day.

I agree with you that you CAN do it like you say but I prefer UW's reso and size/shape. I don't like UW reso on a 16:9 just like I didn't like 16:9 on an old 4:3 years ago.

The notion that black bars are bad is silly. The only differnence between a 16:9 screen in 21:9 res with black bars, and a native 21:9 screen is instead of seeing bezels then the wall above and below the image ur seeing black instead  ...its totaly irrelivant.

As for size, i was just using it as an example.

u can get 32" 4k monitors, they will produce a 30" 21:9 image.

if you get a native 21:9 monitor at a set size, then get a 4k monitor 2" bigger and create a 21:9 image, put them side by side the image will be identical. Same number of pixels, same size, same ppi.
