HP forces Intel to officially support 128GB DDR4 on 9th gen core CPUs

Intel is officially supporting Up To 128GB DDR4 on 9th gen Intel core CPUs.

 

This news come after HP offered Up To 128GB DDR4 on an upcoming mainstream product which forced Intel to come out and officially support the configuration.

 

The configuration is enabled by double height double capacity 32GB DDR4 DIMMs and Samsung's new 16GB DDR4 chips.

 

We don't know if this support is coming to 8th Gen Intel products or Skylake X products. There's no technological reason why they shouldn't be able to. They'd just need to issue a microcode update or a BIOS update for compatbility.

Normally mainstream processors only support 64GB, by virtue of two memory channels, two DIMMs per memory channel (2DPC), and the maximum size of a standard consumer UDIMM being 16GB of DDR4, meaning 4x16GB = 64GB. However the launch of two different technologies, both double height double capacity 32GB DDR4 modules from Zadak and G.Skill, as well as new 16Gb DDR4 chips coming from Samsung, means that technically in a consumer system with four memory slots, up to 128GB might be possible.

 

At present Intel is only talking about the new Core 9th Gen processors that are set to hit the market on October 19th, which are the Core i9-9900K, the Core i7-9700K, and the Core i5-9600K. There has been no statement on previous generations of processors that support DDR4, or if there is any change on the high-end desktop platform for 256GB support.

Definitely sounds cool and I'm glad HP forced Intel to do this. AMD has said they're open to the possibility of enabling support for this for existing products in future updates.

 

I'm not sure if mainstream platform users want 128GB DDR4 but now it's happening anyways :D.

Double stacked RAM no less, meaning any CPU cooler that isnt "100% compatible" (coolers that dont overhang the RAM slots) wont fit, ergo NH-D15, DRP4, etc.

Really though this doesn't seem like much of a stretch.  We had 32 GB a long time ago already and this is just "2 more steps".

 

Also, the whole "HP forces Intel" thing doesn't really make sense...

OR, we combine both 16GB DDR4 chips AND double Stacked ram, and then get 256GB of ram in dual channel...

This isn't for main stream its for business cause they will want 128GB of RAM sure they probably should be using xeon at that point there is some reasons why they might not wanna, e.g. core series are faster, which if you are using 128GB of RAM might be useful, second thing is the xeon equivalents to the core series will be able to support up to 128GB cause they will also have to support up to 128GB if the core series does, so it might be a case HP was forcing intel to do it so they can get it on xeon as it might be a in for a penny in for a pound case of they should/need to support it on both. Either way it's happening and it is good for the consumer in one way or another

It'll be interesting to see how Windows 10 Home reacts to having exactly 128GB RAM considering Windows 10 Home is artificially limited to just supporting 128GB of RAM.

probably doesn't mean much in desktops since 64GB and 128GB is already much more than what people use on consumer platforms

 

this is amazing news for RAM eaters like me who want more than 32GB in a SODIMM laptop, I want some of that 64GB SODIMM DDR4 soon in the future, when 24GB for me is already lacking sometimes. 

max is 2x16GB currently, which is 32GB, with this, it means that I can use 2x32GB for 64GB total, assuming 8th gen compatibility.

Happens all the time, no one was forced to do anything. Intel just lists maximum supported at the time, you can go back and look at older CPUs and their maximum ram support is actually no longer correct because larger modules have come on the market, that's all this is.

This seems to be implying we will see 32GB unbuffered ECC DDR4 DIMMs in the near future. 32GB DIMMs have already existed for years in the server market for DDR3 even, but we have yet to see a 32GB standard desktop DIMM.

They exist but extremely new and probably extremely expensive lol.

Mostly likely yes they will, unless there is some unforeseen issue with the IMC on those CPUs but I doubt it.
