GTX 1080 to an RTX 2080 – My benchmarks

Note: I intend to update this post as questions or comments come in.

 

My system specifications

  • Intel Core i7-8700K (3.7 GHz stock) @ 4.9 GHz
  • Asetek 570LXL 240 mm CPU liquid cooler
  • Gigabyte Z370XP SLI
  • Corsair Vengeance LPX 16 GB (3000 MHz, dual channel)
  • EVGA SuperNOVA NEX 750W PSU

I owned a Zotac GeForce GTX 1080 AMP Extreme for the past two years, which is one of the fastest retail boards available.

 

The specifications of the Zotac GeForce GTX 1080 AMP Extreme

  • Default GPU clock: 1772 MHz (10% increase over a reference GTX 1080)
  • Default boost clock: 1911 MHz (10% increase over a reference GTX 1080)
  • Default memory clock: 1350 MHz (8% increase over a reference GTX 1080)

I now own a NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2080 Founders Edition, which is clocked a little higher than a reference board

 

The specifications of the NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2080 Founders Edition

  • Default GPU clock: 1515 MHz
  • Default boost clock: 1800 MHz (5% increase over a reference RTX 2080)
  • Default memory clock: 1750 MHz

In addition to the increased boost clock, I used the following custom clocks for all my tests:

  • Custom GPU clock: 1605 (6% increase over a reference RTX 2080)
  • Custom boost clock: 1890 (10% increase over a reference RTX 2080)

I am using the launch 411.63 drivers. No doubt performance will increase with driver updates over the next few months.

Whilst the percentage increases are not massive, the RTX 2080 offers more than simply higher performance in rasterized games/benchmarks.

 

New and improved features over the GTX 1080 include:

General notes

  • The fans lowest speed is 41%. Whilst this is quiet, it’s not as quiet as the Zotac card, the fans of which wouldn’t turn on until the card reached 60C.
  • The LED lighting is green only. However, you can change the brightness, make it ‘breathe’ and turn it off completely.

It got a standard rasterized game/benchmark performance boost as all previous generations.
 

However, the RRP is increased over past generation average, due to the addition of RT and Tensor core silicon.

 

Whether that's worth it is up to the individual.

The RTX 2080 is also one of the cheapest ways to attain 4K/60 ultra in most games, which is another reason someone may buy this card.

 

Current UK prices (mid-October 2018):

 

Cheapest GTX 1080: £400 (from £365 used)

Cheapest GTX 1080 Ti: £610 (from £479 used)

Cheapest RTX 2080: £730
Cheapest RTX 2080 Ti: £1,100

What are your max core clocks on the 1080? If it is 1911mhz that seems a bit low as some FE cards can hit 2100mhz. Assuming they are properly cooled. My 1080 can boost to 2100mhz no problem. I feel like that would close the gap more making the 2080 even more lackluster

I sold the GTX 1080 a few weeks ago, sorry :(

I used the in-game benchmarks for fair (as possible) comparison.

It took around two weeks, on and off.
