Trying to Upgrade a rig,need some direction

Hey all, My Rig currently comprised of a i5 7600 paired with an EVGA 1080 with 16 GBs of ram seems to be inadequate for some games. I just upgraded from a 1070 and have noticed very little fps boost... This leads me to believe I am being bottlenecked by my CPU but i know that the cpu i have is still pretty recent... my friend has a laptop with an i7 7700hq and a 1070 and he will get between 30-45 fps more than I do in battlefield 1... shouldnt i be kicking his butt with the higher speed and clocked i5 and 1080 or are i7's really that much better? What do i need to upgrade to see my fps go higher? or is my build fine?

What are the temps and usages when gaming?

First of all what exact 1080 do you have? How much V ram? Try a few things before upgrading your CPU, because their Gpu might have better cooling than yours. 

1. Order a new Gpu backplate

2. Replace the stock thermal compound in the Gpu

3. Put better fans

4. Try to ask someone who can examine it in real life, if not provide us with as much details as possible.

5. Sell your GPU

6. Contact Nvidia or whichever company you got the 1080 from or store

7. Blow out any dust.

 

Okay, so if you have more V Ram than your friend, than try the things I mentioned as the problem I really think has to do with cooling. Please provide us with more details. I really hope I could help. See ya!

Every 1080 has the same amount of Vram, 8GB.

EVGA FTW2 icx Edition ,and the thermals are fine as well as i have no concern regarding my graphics card

 

i am more so looking for whether his cpu is outperforming mine, and if my i5 7600 is not good enough for running newer games.

 

like in battlefield one on 1080p high settings, im getting between 65-85 in heated gunfights, and i just dont know if that feels right for a EVGA 1080 to be not performing better, and if its being held back by my non overclocked i5-7600

The card isn't the issue at all, are you playing at 1080p? What settings?

 

Also, an i7 even if it isn't overclocked can hit a far higher boost clock frequency than your i5. The flagship consumer i7's since Skylake have much higher single core performance thanks largely to high frequencies and hyperthreading. Since pretty much every game focuses on single core performance this result doesn't necessarily surprise me.

yes sir, 1080p generally at high or ultra for most games with a 144 hz, so unfortunately for me fps is huge because i can notice the stutter under like 75fps and its frustrating (god im spoiled arent i) 

okay, so given your wisdom, what would be a fair upgrade? go all out on a new i7-9700k or wait for an older one to drop in price?

Okay so I know this is between an i5-7600k and a 1080Ti (hard to find 7600 comparisons, and a 1080Ti would only push the bottleneck limit) but this gives you an idea of the performance difference between your i5 and the i7 7700k. You'll actually notice that there's not a huge difference because both are OC at 4.8GHz. The fact that you can't OC your non-k SKU CPU is probably the performance loss you are talking about.

interesting, so given this knowledge, what do you think a timeline for upgrades would be? newer i5 (i5 8600k/9600k) with overclocking potential, or a newer i7 (i7-8700k/9700k) to get the extra *umph* i need over an i5?

If you only want to game at 1080 144hz then going all out for the 9700k is not necessary. An overclocked 6700k or 7700k will get you steady 144FPS+ no problem. 

 

I own the EVGA GTX 1080 SC2 Gaming iCX and before I had my 8700k it was paired with my 6700k OC @ 4.8GHz, and with V-sync on I was maxed at 144FPS Ultra settings in every game I played.

 

What motherboard do you have, can you OC with it?

If you want to move up to 1440p down the road get the 8700k, if you are all good with 1080p 144Hz then try and see if there's a good used 6700k or 7700k in your area. 

 

If your current motherboard supports overclocking then your laughing, and the upgrade will be super easy.

msi Z270-A Pro

 

also, when moving to a newer CPU, they all require a new MOBO so that is also something that i am aware of and factoring into with costs and such but my goals are eventually to do 100+ 1440p

 GPU backplates do not improve thermal performance. Also, your suggestions are so ill-informed it hurts. Replacing the stock thermal compound, swapping for better fans, and selling the GPU is TERRIBLE advice to give right away. There are like 20 better things to try before getting to that level.

Awesome it's a great GPU! EVGA did good work on the iCX cards so the thermal performance is great.

 

With that MB can swap right into a 6700k or 7700k and OC. Even if you are planning on 1440p gaming down the road these CPU's will hold up. It's a matter of much Ca$h you wanna spend.

 

If you get the 8700k you will need a new Z370 motherboard. You are clearly aware of the costs associated, so if higher FPS is #goals then it's ultimately your decision.

you have fantastic advice, thank you very much, you have cleared alot of things for me. I just get appalled when my friend running a laptop i7 7700hq and laptop 1070 is merking my desktop i5 and desktop 1080 by a reasonable chunk in most heavy taxing games.

 

I hear hyperthreading in gaming and most of the benefits associated with getting an i7 over an i5 for strictly gaming makes it an easy choice to get a i5 over an i7 due to the small benefit gained VS Ca$h.. is this a myth or will an i7 always outperform an i5?

Yes. I know if you upgrade the Gpu it will short circuit the whole thing. Also, every GPU actually comes with 11 GB ram, and you should always use previous gen CPUs, as 6th gen i7s is same as 9th gen. They even have the same socket. Just helping out...

referring mostly to battlefield 1, battlefield 5, and PUBG/ Ring of Elysium. Everything else runs pretty fast, but games like sea of thieves will also get drops and generally low frames for a 1080 IMO

 

EDIT: cooling is absolutely not a factor tho, card is basically brand new and my thermals are always very well balanced for my EVGA 1080, like JM21 said, this particular EVGA 1080 runs very cool compared to my old 1070 ( ASUS STRIX 1070 OC Edition) which frequently had all 3 fans running 100% and at 65-80 degrees as soon as i booted up a game

Yeah man, that stings haha, no laptop should outperform a gaming battle station. Granted your friend clearly has a B.A. gaming laptop. 

 

Hyperthreading usually is the result of higher gaming performance in more demanding games. But again many games right now focus on simple single core performance. And high frequency is the king of single core performance. That's why in some titles an i5 k SKU and i7 k SKU have pretty much identical performance (if they're at the same frequency), and in others you see the i7 take a clear lead. But one thing that video didn't fully justify is that the 7700k can 'usually' OC to 5.0GHz. Also, Intel wouldn't allow for an i5 to be better, the i7 will always be subjectively the better performer in any task. This is no my myth.

 

My personal recommendation is getting a 6700k or 7700k, mainly because you have a Z270 MB. Unless the 8700k upgrade doesn't hurt your wallet too much.
