How often should I check a hard drive?

I have an old hard drive that I use as an offline backup. How often should I power on the hard drive to check the data?

Once a year? I check my offline backup drives once every two or so years, and they work just fine.

Once every 6 months to a year is a good idea. Drives do have a finite amount of time the data will stay on them but checking it yearly won't hurt. 

 

At least it isn't like an SSD where after 6 months to a 2 years the data could be gone as the cells loose their charge.
