Seems like PowerA secured their way into making a wireless GameCube controller for the Nintendo Switch.

These controllers come in the standard GameCube attire of grey, black and the indigo color that was prevalent on release.

The controller will make use of AA batteries and uses Bluetooth, meaning that people'll get this working on PC very quickly.

Personally, I'm not too shocked that they're coming out with another round of GameCube controllers, but I am surprised that they're actually going for Bluetooth. Hopefully these have rumble, unlike the Wavebird from way back when.

These seem really cool!

 

There are things that I'm like "I wish they did [blank]" like make it use the gameCube ports, but if it uses Bluetooth you can probably use these on your PC as well, which I would love to get one of these for just for that! (It will probably use Dinput, not Xinput, I realize that).

Furthmore great choice on improving the Dpad, which kinda makes me think you might be able to use these for more than Smash (the dpad was only used in Smash for taunting, something that is essentially a joke feature for the most part).

 

But the color on the Platinum seems a little off. It's more grey than 'Platinum' (silver), although the Platinum controllers were basically painted that color..

 

Also, I wish they were rechargeable instead of taking AA's.. Although on the other hand; in the future it's easier to replace a double A, instead of getting a proprietary battery.

From what I remember the actual Platinum Silver controllers were more reflective and shiny rather than dulled.

Ye, it was like they added some metalic glossyness + glitter to the controller. Same for the PS2 silver controllers.

 

Also, forgot to say.. But I hoped these controllers will be as sturdy as the originals were.

Yes yes yes  I never got the chance to get the GameCube controllers for the Wii U. This and Breath of the Wild may finally be enough to make me go buy a Switch.

How many times will they re-release a gamecube controller for their newest systems, just to please old school Smash Bros fan... Or are they really that acutely aware that their controllers have sucked since then? They should just release a new console with the gamecube controller at this point instead of their current "classic" or "pro" controllers, will save people a few buck.

This isn't really news. These were announced like in June.

 

Power A has a Wired and a Wireless GameCube style controller and a Wired and a Wireless "Pro" style controller. None of them have HD Rumble, IR, NFC for Amiibo, or even normal Rumble. The wireless controllers have Motion Control, but the Wired do not.

 

Hori has a series of character themed wired GameCube style controllers called the Battle Pad. These are pretty basic. No HD Rumble, IR, NFC, or Rumble. They *do* have turbo, but that's not really a benefit for Smash, and def not tournament legal.

 

PDP also has a series of character themed wired GameCube/Pro style hybrid controllers called the Fight Pad. These also lack HD Rumble, IR, NFC and Rumble. They do however have a grip that looks more comfortable since it's shaped more like a modern controller, and they have a swappable right thumbstick that can change from a standard stick to a c-styled stick.

 

All three of these wired options connect via USB and all of them have added buttons for Home and Share in addition to the standard GameCube buttons. The wireless Power A ones use Bluetooth.

 

If you want Rumble support the only GameCube style option at the moment is the GameCube controller adapter with classic GameCube controllers. The JoyCons, and the Pro Controller will also likely support rumble.

They're going to re-release it until they stop making Smash. I mean GameCube controllers are basically purpose designed for Competitive Smash... They have the larger A button for normals, with the smaller B button for the less commonly used specials. They have the Y and X buttons places so they're easy to transition from. The analogue triggers pull in linearly so they're easy to get to precise amounts. The 8-way etching is great for positioning tilts and smashes. And the C-stick is far more easy to slam than a traditional analogue stick.

 

It's like the dedicated Pokken Controllers that are really popular in that competitive scene. They cut out all the noise and optimize the controller for the game at hand.

 

On the other hand GameCube controllers are not very good controllers for much else. They're not very ergonomic if you need to move controls quickly, the C-stick isn't comfortable for games where you need to do extended aiming like FPSes. The face button layout can make many games that equally favor the face buttons awkward. They're bulky and just don't really represent the advances we've had in controller ergonomics since the early 2000s.

Personally, I like this a lot. I love the old GameCube controllers. I still think they are one of the most comfortable controllers to hold, it looks funky, but it fits nicely in the hands. Having bluetooth support will be huge for getting it to work with a PC which I am also excited for.

 

These controllers sold me on the GameCube back in the day when it came out. I was really into racing games and fast and the furious at the time (it was the early 2000s, everyone was lol), and when NFS Underground came out, GameCube was the only console that used the triggers for acceleration and braking (which no one was doing at the time) so you could precisely hold the acceleration for perfect launches in drag races. And, me being 14, thought that having the NOS button be the little red 'B' button, was so appropriate.

 

After looking this up, I realized that PS2 was trying to use the right analog stick for acceleration and braking... glad that didn't catch on...

The xbox used the triggers for acceleration and braking too.

Yeah outside of smash, gamecube controller really sucks. The switch pro one is much nicer imo, but obviously almost everything (N64 excepted) is better than the stock mini-cons.

I own the red one of these and honestly it's the best controller I've bought in a while, and certainly one of the best third party controllers I've seen. There's like no dead zone needed on the sticks for pc and it feels really nice, face buttons and directional pad. No analog trigger though. 

I have a ton of controllers but most are first party, so it's hard to compare, but I do like it a lot more than the ps4 controller. I do not know how durable it is though, I only have one and it's seen limited use. 2 friends own them and they are both happy with them 

I have no idea if the rest of their controllers are this good, I have a feeling not.

Wavebirds do work while using the official adapter yeah. Be careful though, some of the third party adapters that look identical don't work properly with the wavebird due to not delivering enough power. If plugging the adapter into a USB hub you may also need a powered hub as they can be pretty power hungry.

But they are wired (10ft usb cable) and the c stick can be swapped for a normal stick for better compatibility with current games, I honestly want these so bad, and I even have 2 original GC controller and the Wii u adapter.
