Surround sound videos

Supportsneedlove

Hi!

Does anyone know where I can find some of those cool videos where i sounds like the sound is coming from a specific place? Like a fly buzzing around your head or someone knocking on a door.

Uh, movies in BluRay and DVD?

But you do have to have a decent surround setup for those, otherwise you can try some of those simulated surround demos on a headphone, some work well enough to sound convincing

Yeah I don't have nothing fancy. It's those free demo videos I'm looking for.

I don't have any headphones around to test it, but something like this, perhaps?

There are a few Dolby test YouTube videos with different scenarios  to use a surround system.

Here is another one:

I personally like the second one, because who doesn't like the sound of a heli flying by in your room at max volume, waking up the neighbours and the police being calle.... Hold on someone is knocking on the door. lol

I like how dude asks for surround sound videos and gets links to binaural You Tube videos. Classic.

This site/guy has all of the Dolby/THX/DTS sound test files, including some movie trailers in surround sound.

https://thedigitaltheater.com/index.php/dolby-trailers/

You'll need VLC or Kodi to be able to play them back in surround. Bit Harvest, Unfold, and Amaze are my favorites.

I've also got some Blue Man Group songs in 5.1 and Copelands Ixora+Twin that I merged into quad.

Absolutely hilarious, I am wearing a $12 headset.  I usually  just use it for skype calls because of the built in mic.  Anyway it turns out the left and right channels are backwards in the head phones.

The reason why people linked binaural, is because it gives you realistic surround sound effects.

Besides, most people don't really understand how surround sound works (just look at people who buy "surround sound" headphones).

Granted, headphones vs proper 5.1/7.1 speaker setup is very different. But my point still stands, if you want to listen to something "surround sound" that is really cool, then binaural audio is an awesome place to start.

It is cool, but it's explicitly stereo as well. I'm not knocking binaural, as long as it's done correctly like Hellblade, but surround sound it is not.

Incidentally I've heard the surround sound in Hellblade suffers because they focused so much on the binaural, so it still only plays stereo instead of in 3D space a proper system can use.

Oh in terms of practical implementations, it's pretty sparse.

But Surround Sound and Stereo are not explicitly exclusive, in my opinion. Because with Binaural stereo, you can accurately predict direction and distance of sound, despite only using 2 sources.

Never the less, the developers of Hellblade making a development error/oversight because they didn't properly engineer their audio is neither here nor there. Either way, I digress.

Okay... but BInaural is by definition a method of stereo recording. In no way is it actually surround sound. It is stereo. It has 2 channels. Surround sound has 3 at minimum.

Hellblades developers didn't... not... properly engineer their audio, it's just recorded in binaural which is stereo and thus doesn't work on surround systems. The only way to "fix" that would be to record one voice at a time, convert it to mono, and then place it in 3D space. And then it wouldn't really have the binaural audio thing working, so it would have to be a separate "track" for stereo/headphones and surround systems. Which would be cool... but probably pretty impractical. The only kind of benefit to binaural without headphones is that on a decent set of speakers set up correctly is that the effect can still kind of work to a degree.

So surround and binaural are explicitly exclusive. One is strictly stereo, the other has has up to a "common" of 10 with 9.1. Although now Atmos is coming and that has even more speakers...
