SFF - Ryzen or Intel // NCase v Dan A4

I currently have quite a nice ATX-sized watercooled system which is my pride & joy but I'm moving 9000km away and need to do some serious downsizing. I want to venture into SFF for my next build. I have a few things Im stuck on. I've narrowed it down to 2 builds to my needs right now.

Build 1

CPU Ryzen 2700X
Cooler Wraith Prism
Motherboard Asus ROG Strix X470-I
Ram Corsair Vengeance RGB Pro 3000MHz (16GB 2x8)
GPU GTX1080 Founders Edition
Power Supply Corsair SF600
Storage WD Blue 4TB 3.5''
SSD WD Black m.2 NVME 500GB

Price: $1,490 USD

Build 2

CPU Intel i7-8700k
Cooler Noctua L9i
Motherboard Asus ROG Strix Z370-I
Ram Corsair Vengeance RGB Pro 3000MHz (16GB 2x8)
GPU GTX1080 Founders Edition
Power Supply Corsair SF600
Storage WD Blue 4TB 3.5''
SSD WD Black m.2 NVME 500GB

$1,620 USD

Given the two options, which would you pick? I don't have a preference either way - I have only ever used Intel CPUs but would like to give Ryzen a try and it's over $100 cheaper.

My next option is cases.

I'm thinking of one of the following:

  1. NCASE M1

  2. NCASE M1 (with TG Window from SFFLab)

  3. DAN A4-SFX

Which of these would you pick given the choice and would you go for the Silver or black version of the NCASE M1. I keep flip-flopping over what could I prefer. I also love the Ghost S1 but its a lot more expensive and elusive and I think the Cougar and Rajintek SFF options are honestly ugly.

Opinions please!

Did the Prism fit into the DAN A4-SFX? I think L9i, C7, or the 545LC are your best options for the A4 SFX. With the NCase, you can even go custom loop with the ample amount space ;-).

I think Ncase M1 with TG is not on my recommend list since the airflow path without the side entry panel is quite questionable.

So I would say Ncase M1 normal if you want an easier time and potentially even dabble into advanced custom loop, but if size is a bigger concern then go for the A4 SFX, although you should probably delid the CPU and consider the 545LC or maybe take the C7 Cu and replace the fan with the Noctua Slim.

Interested in computer architecture? Still in middle or high school? P.M. me!

I love computer hardware and feel free to ask me anything about that (or phones). I especially like SSDs. But please do not ask me anything about Networking, programming, command line stuff, or any relatively hard software stuff. I know next to nothing about that.

The Prism doesnt fit in the A4 sadly - its off by about 12mm.  On this route I'd have to go for a standalone air cooler (which increases cost) but I can also then drop to the 2700 as the only difference is the cooler. I did consider a custom loop with the Ncase but I'm also thinking I may just save that for later down the line and start with a regular air cooling loop which I've suprisingly never done before.

I do love the idea of going with the TG window so I can see inside but also understand the detriment to my cooling setup, IIRC its not a massive difference but it is something. I guess without going for the window I also have the option of using an AIO for the CPU If I so desired too, or just fans firing down on the mobo area.

Mostly gaming and photoshop,  with a lot of Netflix & Youtube in between. Not planning to stream or anything but the main reason for considering Ryzen is curiosity over the platform, the upgrade path (at least 2 more generations of CPUs on the same motherboard unlike Z370) and for if I so desired to have a more multithreaded use case in the future.

I'd probably lean towards intel then. Do keep in mind 9th gen announcement is literally right around the corner (tomorrow) so you might want to check that out and maybe get it instead of an 8th gen cpu. Or maybe it'll be underwhelming and you'd rather go ryzen for upgrade path because there won't be any more cpus on this socket after 9th gen.

Yea this build is a few weeks away so will definitely see what intel has on offer.

Still undecided on the case though - to window or not to window..
