Not E.Coli - Over 1400 Canadian Fast Food Restaurants closed due to a virus

TL;DR:

Chains such as Swiss Chalet, Harvey's, Milestones, Kelseys, Montana's, Bier Markt, East Side Mario's, The Landing Group of Restaurants and Prime Pubs are all closed to due Malware.

Quotes/Excerpts:

Quote

A Canadian company that owns many popular restaurant chains says it was hit with a "malware outbreak". Recipe Unlimited... said Swiss Chalet, Harvey's, Milestones, Kelseys, Montana's, Bier Markt, East Side Mario's, The Landing Group of Restaurants and Prime Pubs brands have been affected. Some locations have temporarily closed while others are offering reduced services such as no debit and credit card transactions. Recipe Unlimited declined to offer further details about the attack. "Our priority is to continue working diligently with third-party security experts and internal teams to resolve the situation as quickly and effectively as possible," The problem sparked many customer complaints on social media. Over the the weekend, many people also complained on Swiss Chalet's Facebook site about slow service and difficulty ordering online. The chain repeatedly replied that "due to unforeseen circumstances, we are currently experiencing a system outage." It added that its "teams are working diligently to have this corrected." Recipe Unlimited franchises and/or operates more than 1,000 restaurants, mainly in Canada.

My Thoughts:
At least it isn't an E.Coli outbreak or anything like that. Just goes to show how quickly malware can spread in a corporate network and take down thousands of computers.

it's not just the ATM, is the entire ordering system is based on computers now.

The few that stayed open are probably taking orders on paper and doing cash only.

System specs:

4790k

GTX 1050

16GB DDR3

Samsung evo SSD

a few HDD's

Yes and no.

There is a lot to running and specially supplying a fast food restaurant that is all automatic: as soon as register computers record a sale the system updates the location supplies and based on trends it predicts when new supplies need to be shipped so they arrive to the location without them running out of space or out of food and while it's all fresh.

These are all skills regular restaurant personnel have done manually for well, centuries. However a fast food chain works on the principle of doing all of this extremely well to keep prices low for the public yet margins high for the company.

If you want a more traditional experience those aren't taken offline by a hack, so you're more than welcome to patronize a local small, hip distro for some really damn tasty burgers with all kinds of artesanal bread options and exotic ingredients....and also expect like a 20 to 30 dollar bill for your burger instead of 5 bucks because the rest of the cost is literally done by automated systems on the fast food chains and employees well, they actually don't know how to do shit by themselves without the computers because why would they pay highly trained restaurant personnel if the computer just tell em click here so supplies get here tomorrow, it knows how much you'll need just click the button.

I worked at a resturaunt for 5 years and when our computer system went down (which contains the credit card system and the punch clock system all in one) we would revert back to paper everything and keep running. Paper money , paper time slips , hand written paper tickets , ect.... and that was 2014.

I wonder if this will turn out to be the first UEFI malware that was recently spotted in the wild?

Imagine how much it's costing them to be closed vs how much they spend on their IT budget. These companies always discount and discredit the value of quality IT staff and infrastructure until something like this happens.

But hey, it's good for those in the IT industry.

Let’s just say that their head office is likely to receive a much larger IT budget next year.

This is is a damn shame. There are some kickass restaurants affected.

Can't wait for the name to be E.coli.

Come Bloody Angel

Break off your chains

And look what I've found in the dirt.

Seems she was struggling

Something is wrong with this world.

Fierce Bloody Angel

The blood is on your hands

Why did you come to this world?

Everybody turns to dust.
