TL;DR:

Cancelled your MoviePass subscription? You've automatically gotten a free upgrade that'll automatically charges your account unless you opt-out.

Quote

[If] MoviePass isn’t quite dead yet, there’s been no mistaking the telltale signs of a dead man walking. It’s posted huge quarterly losses and is facing a shareholder lawsuit. The company is now sending emails to what it described as a “select test group” of customers who it says did not opt in to the new three movies a month plan. The emails say that these subscribers’ accounts will be re-activated on October 4th and be put back on the monthly $9.95 billing cycle unless they click a specific opt-out link. MoviePass wrote that these subscribers will be rolled back into a program that offers “unlimited movies". “Because we really hope you begin enjoying your MoviePass subscription again". The email also tells customers that if they do opt-out, their “subscription will be canceled". According to the Verge, MoviePass appears to believe it has the right to re-enroll people whose accounts lapsed just because it says it does. This is at least the second time since August when MoviePass has used a shady tactic to re-enroll customers. But this latest move is at the very least unethical, and it is questionably legal.

My Thoughts:

This is clear fraud and they're likely about to screw themselves over hard. It's hard to force Mastercard and Visa to end a relationship with your company but this will definitely do it. Moviepass will be dead by the end of 2018.

But for real, moviepass is crazy. Its like "oh that is a bad idea that will definetely not make money" and they did it anyway. Welp, its a shame it never happened in my country (and never will). I would like to go to the cinema for cheap.

Ultra is stupid. ALWAYS.

My friend showed me that video and everytime I see movie pass doing something like this I remember this video. I told my parents and all my friends not to buy into the movie pass sham when it came out. The person behind it was from a company known for fraud and movie pass is tied to a company known for data analytics so not only are they taking your money their also taking your data! https://www.businessinsider.com/moviepass-owner-emerged-from-indian-company-accused-of-massive-fraud-2018-7

There's no way in fuck it's legal to just charge someone for something after they canceled.

I look forward to people getting a 1$ class action settlement.

This is sort of a more broad issue that I am taking a stance on, but it needs to be said.

It is LONG past time that companies are required to mean "unlimited", when they say "unlimited". No "unlimited *with X limitation"

An asterisk behind it that denotes a specific limitation, should not be allowed. Either they fucking mean "unlimited", or they need to clearly state that it (whatever "it" may be) is limited.

Either your product or service is actually unlimited, or it isn't. Footnotes should not be allowed in this regard. Either directly say what you are fucking selling, or fuck completely off. This practice is blatantly disingenuous and needs to be made illegal.

That is all I have to say.

Ketchup is better than mustard.

GUI is better than Command Line Interface.

Dubs are better than subs

This... is quite the fraudulent behavior.
I hope they get hit with a bunch of chargeback and a few class action lawsuit.
