I have a Dell XPS X8700 running windows 10. I boot from a 250GB SSD and have no issues with that. I ran a clean install of Windows 10 a few months ago and have had no issues with any of that. The only issue I have is that WHENEVER I restart the computer, whether I do it manually or its an automatic restart, it freezes on the Dell screen. It doesn't matter if its part of an install or update, or just because, if I click "restart" it will show its updating or whatever as usual, but then when it gets to the DELL screen it just stops. I've thought, "well maybe it just needs a lot of time for some reason" and I've left it alone for hours and nothing at all changes on screen. What I'll end up doing is doing a forced shut down and then I could literally hit power and start it back up seconds after I force it off and it will boot no problem. Of course if I was updating it'll tell me something like its undoing whatever changes it had made. Another thing is from what I can remember it started doing this even right after I did the clean install. I've changed boot drives a few times, from the original HDD to 1 and then another SSD. Even before I put the new SSD in and even before the clean install it would still do this. I thought it must be some odd hardware issue, but when searching online I see a number of people, very often also using Dell, having the same issue. Now, that doesn't mean that it still can't be a hardware issue but I thought it might make more sense for it to be something else. It seemed there were a fair few people with the issue on their laptops. I figured it was worth a shot seeing if anyone had this issue and was able to fix it.

A few things to note:

1. One thing brought up as a solution that I saw was unplugging all peripherals. I did have an external harddrive that I often left plugged in that I thought could be the problem but it didn't matter how little I had plugged in, even nothing, because it still freezes in same place.

2. The only other real thing I saw that seemed somewhat promising only because of its absurdity was to change your power settings to Performance Mode, or something like that. Anyway I tried that and it made no difference.

Well that's it. If anyone has any ideas I'd be grateful to hear them. Thanks for taking the time and if you have any question for me I'll my best to answer them.

As it turns out, it must be something to do with the windows update. I say that because after I made this post, I did a "Update and Shutdown" and when I went back to turn it on it froze on the Dell screen. I couldn't believe it. Anyway I actually had to force shutdown twice. After the first one when I turned it back on it did the undoing changes and then froze once again on the dell screen. Then I did another force shutdown and it sort of turned itself back on automatically (like a normal "restart" would). At that point it finally came back on. So long-story less long....I don't know what's going on. I guess it's something to do with the windows update.
