Hd 7970 Ghz 6GB Edition Troubleshooting

I recently picked up an untested HD 7970 GHz Vapor-X 6GB from Sapphire off of Ebay which was being sold for parts or repair (seller claims it was working when they stopped using it, upgraded and left it sitting in an anti static bag until they sold it). Unfortunately, the card would not boot on either BIOS so I have since torn the card apart to clean it up. Upon doing so I discovered two things that may have been the cause of the issue. 1) There appears to be a plastic film still over the backplate on the inside of the card (between the back of the card and the backplate, not on the outside of the card). 2) One of the heatsinks on the card feels very loose compared to its mates. It is the dark grey heatsink directly below the top bottom most pink capacitor pairs (if you go from the bottom right memory chip it is the one directly to the right of it). Do you think either of these issues could be the reason that the card no longer works? When you plug in the card, the system can tell that there's a GPU plugged in as you can't use the integrated graphics with it in there, but it won't show up in device manager. I have tested it in two different systems with the same results. The fans and LEDs work just fine when the card is given power. If anyone has any tips before I try flashing the BIOS, that would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

No the film is added as a barrier to prevent shorting the card out. That's a heatsink on a VRM. As long as you can see it's still physically making a connection I would say the GPU core is probably dead as it was around during the times of mining

Update to this. I was able to reflash the VBIOS and while I still can't boot with the card installed and the BIOS set to use PEG as the main graphics, I am able to use the integrated with the card installed and it at least shows up in Windows. I do however get error 43. Any ideas on how to fix this?

The loose heatsink should not be an issue.

I don't have my Vapor-X HD 7970 3GB anymore, but I'll use my HD Vapor-X HD 7950 Boost as reference, and confirm with you later.

 

The card should have a button to switch between the two vBIOS.

Have you tried the second BIOS first?

I have indeed. I have a few 7950s but this is my first 7970. I'm not really sure what the issue is now.
