Hi,

I have an issue with my new build. When i press the power button nothing happens. Only the PSU, Case and CPU fans spin a tiny amount. I had this issue when I started upgrading but it went away and everything worked fine for 3 weeks.

My system is an ASUS b350 prime plus mobo, gtx750, ryzen5 2600x, 2x8gb corsair ram (QVL checked), 450watt PSU. The graphics card and PSU are old but have worked without issues.

I had some issue with the RAM which I identified as a faulty stick and ran the pc with 8gb for the last weeks and yesterday the replaced the ram with two new sticks and that worked the whole evening.

Today i just closed the case and now I get the blib again. I replugged all the connections and got it to post again only for the PC to turn off when I lifted it up to put it under the table.

I checked the BIOS battery (3V seems fine), i paperclip tested the PSU and the fan spins normally. I also unplugged all periphery except the 24pin connector and the cpu fan but i dont even get a diagnostic beep.

I have the feeling its the cables but i can't pinpoint it. Cheers

So it works sometimes and sometimes not.

There may be few problems:

1. Problem with PCI-E port - try to remove your GPU and plug again, and check what happens when you lift up / down card a little.

2. Problem with PSU - paperclip is not so good test for PSU, because it can turn on every PSU, even crappy one.

3. Problem with mainboard - who knows.

4. Problem with processor with cpu cooler screwed on too tight (I found that problem once or twice on some old, used motherboards).

5. Dust?

Just guessing of course, it may be anything in this case. Focus on 1. or 4. If you have other PSU - check it first.

When you go to turn it back on do you have to unplug it from the wall or hit the PSU power switch then pug it back in or turn the switch on again? What you describe sounds like a physical issue. One irritated by any movement. This makes me wonder if anything is shorting. Likely to ground.

@homeap5 True, paperclip is not a conclusive test. I probably have to test if I get smooth power output.

GPU seems fine but the system doesnt turn on with or without GPU.

Mainboard can always be the problem but like the CPU and based on the good performance over the last weeks, its seems fine.

I agree PSU seems to be suspect :D

@Windows7ge Yes, to get the blib i have to unplug it. When I leave it in the mobo led are lit but the button push does absolutely nothing.

and yes it could be a short or loose contact. Ill unscrew the mobo and rebuild the whole system from the ground up.

Make sure you didn't leave any unnecessary standoffs in under the motherboard. Reconnect every PSU connector. From there if the issue persists disconnect devices 1 at a time until it stays on reliability. If it never does then I'd suspect the PSU itself.

You could try unplugging everything from the PSU and shorting the PSU green wire to ground. Shake the case or PSU if you removed it. Wiggle the wires around. If it turns off then the PSU has an internal short like a frayed wire.
