Need help setting up a router as a repeater

Hey guys I am wondering if someone can help me with a network issues. I have a wireless modem that I got from my isp and it does not quite reach the room my computer is in. I just bought a wireless router and wanted to know if i could use the wireless router as a extender

Some routers have the ability to be setup as an access point. What brand and model is the router you bought?

Only thing I disagree on with that guide is setting the IP address.  Generally you'd want to makes sure its outside the DHCP range of the main network or set it to DHCP to ensure it doesn't conflict with another device on the LAN.

 

Granted the issue with the latter is if you ever need to alter the settings again later, you need to know what its current IP address is.  Although many routers will tell you what DHCP has assigned, not all will, so it might need restoring to factory settings to do so.

That seems a bit premature, as even if it doesn't explicitly mention it you can usually figure out a way to make it work by just turning off the DHCP server.  That said, its not exactly the greater router anyway although my limited experience of repeaters is they are often even worse because they try to fit everything in a smaller space.

 

What model is the repeater and are you using it wired into the main router?  That's the recommended way or it will halve your WiFi speed.

I have not gotten the repeater yet i am looking right now and I am only doing it because i can not figure out how to make the router a repeater without it being hooked up to the main isp router

Bear in mind a repeater NOT hooked up to the main router by cable will only give you at best half the WiFi performance you get when connected to the routers WiFi directly with a good signal.  So powerline repeaters are often a better option there.
