He needs suggestions and advice for his build,

His budget is $2000, he's studying animation creation and 3d animation rendering he's starting his first year next year.

I was thinking to tell him to get first gen thread ripper since they seem to be on sale, some of his classmates suggested core i9 or i7x or  Ryzan 1800.

Ofh BTW the $2000 is for the cpu.only..

Thank you fot the help

ps suggestion for portable / transportable case much appreciated

A ryzen 7 is a good idea for that budget if you go cpu rendering

oh now i understood

A threadripper its better than core i9 for the price

try find the 1950x its for 1000$ maybe even cheaper cause 2nd gen is here

you could also find a 2990wx for 1800$

The ryzen 1800? Or the latest 2700x?

editing/viewport isn't too taxing, but when it comes to simulation and CPU rendering (and straightforward raytracing), more cores is generally better.

Cinebench is generally good reference for rendering performance. https://us.rebusfarm.net/en/tempbench?view=benchmark

(if he wants to play around with game engine models/shaders, that might be another thing though)

ATX? mATX? Asrock X299 mITX?

what PSU and GPU do you currently have? Asking to get the rough idea on small enough cases that would be arm-carry friendly

From what I know he's got a reference titan xp or XP not sure which one, matx if possible.

I don't think threadripper has any itx boards yet

If there are please suggest thanks as for psu I know he's ordering a special one from corsair.

For a first year student, hist department should have suggested requirements. If not, stick with an i7 or Ryzen 7 cpu and a decent GTX gpu. It is quite unlikely that any schoolwork is going to demanding enough to require more power.

The system has to last  the 4yrs he's going to be there, not just the 1 Yr.

The psu is a special one although it is atx it comes with some kind of fall back battery.

oh okay GPU checks out then

if you guys are going threadripper there's only one mATX board for it out there ._. so yeah

forgot to ask, what CPU cooler is he planning to use?

I'm going to assume he's getting a high-wattage ATX sized PSU ._.

newegg quick tags: http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductList.aspx?Submit=ENE&N=100007583 600532674 600006308 600546574&IsNodeId=1&name=MicroATX&cm_sp=Cat_Computer-Cases_3-_-VisNav-_-MicroATXMini

things that looks portable enough: (i've excluded glass panel cases, just in case. but if you're okay with some, then some of them has a glass version)

  • Coolermaster Masterbox Lite 3
  • Coolermaster Masterbox N200
  • Corsair Carbide 88R
  • Thermaltake Core V21
  • Corsair Carbide Air 240 (if you don't mind it being cube-y)

Remember to check with the airline if he can carry-on the PC though. these cases wouldn't pass most airline carry on luggage dimensions, but most airlines should probably understand it's not something for baggage handlers

There's one more that's pretty small, but I wouldn't recommend it 100% unless you guys like this kind of a challenge to build and manage in. It's main selling factor is it's pretty much the smallest mATX case out there that fits a 240mm AIO on the front or a 280mm AIO at the bottom.

He's getting a aio to cool the cpu it's gonna get hot with the work he's doing, l wonder if thread ripper has a aio cooler?

If there is  a matx the 240 or crystal 280x would look sweet

there is. normal asetek-based coolers "might just do", but if the full contact area is a must then you guys might want to wait it out to see how the Enermax Liqtech TR4 v2 ages out (the v1 has production issues with the coolant in the late stages, so don't get that)

remember to check the fan mounting points on the case you're looking through to see if the radiator fits

Cool thanks for  the advice man

I presumed that the system had to last four years. Save the money now because in four years time one will be able to easily buy twice as much power for the same price.

Having a battery backup is a good idea, especially if the system will be rendering overnight. Usually it is separate from the psu.

I see but needs to get the system since he's starting class next Yr, as for the battery and psu he said it was a set from corsair seeing it is corsair I'm guessing it's quality is ok.

What I am saying is that school work years 1 thru 4 are not going to seriously tax an i7 or Ryzen 7 system. So, save a bit now getting a really good i7-8700 or 2700X system today. But before doing this, consult with the department. It almost certainly has hardware suggestions for its students.

Not all Corsair psu are good. Although most of the newer models are good to excellent.
