You see sony is just looking out for you and is preventing you from compromising your user experience. You don't really know whats good for you papa sony has to decide for you. Looks like design isn't the only thing companies are copying from apple but attitude towards consumers also. This decision is clearly made because of greed but the companies seem to think that we are stupid enough that they can spin it as for our own good.

Sony simply have to stop blocking developers from enabling cross platform play. There were no actual problems when Epic accidentally enabled cross platform play, and the only way it was even picked up was due to the differences between both platforms gamer tag system:

Why do people even expect or request cross platform? This hasn't been a thing for fucking decades and I've seen nothing that would make me think it would become a thing.

 

All platforms, including PC specific ones, are built on the premise that they wall up content so you have to use the platform and then get you to stay there with some other offerings and such. Cross-platform play will never be a thing because if anything, publishers are moving further away with guys like EA, Blizzard and now Bethesda taking their big draw titles away from competing platforms to support their own so why would they give up that leverage by allowing cross play between consoles?

They have way too many exclusives for people to leave for this type of reason. Also I think the people who want this are much smaller compared to the entire user base. I mean unless you really want to play with someone you know on a different platform why would you want to play console vs pc in an fps? Seems like a good way to dumpstered.

Holy crap are Sony and Nintendo trading places in the world? Nintendo's historically been that super Japanese company that doesn't "get" the west.

 

For all the people calling this greed, this comment seems way more like cultural disconnect. For Japanese developers a lot of the time game development is about giving users a fixed experience that you make and tightly controlling it because it's about the intent of the experience rather than wide appeal. 

 

This is the same reason why when there was uproar about map rotation in Salmon Run on Splatoon 2 the reply was "You can only access two maps because that's the experience we want you to have. Too bad." And why when Metroid Other M was a total Trainwreck in the west the mindset among the devs was "the west just doesn't like playing games as girls" rather than that they had made any mistakes along the way.

 

I am absolutely shocked that Nintendo even considered supporting CrossPlay for this very reason, and I find it absolutely shocking that Sony, who's traditionally better understood their western audience, is making such a Japanese oriented decision instead of their usual global oriented ones.

It's not greed and it's not cultural disconnect, it's stupidity. Nintendo doesn't do this, despite their death grip on their own IPs. The cultural difference may apply when they don't port the games they themselves produced to other platforms, but when it's about adding an arbitrary restriction to a third party game that is available on every platform it doesn't.

Sony has always been an arrogant company that only does things their own way. The ps4 at launch was an exception rather than the rule and it only happened because of how hard the ps3 bombed at launch - but the ps3 is a great example of sony's mindset: "we'll make a super expensive console with a weird cpu and you're going to buy it because we're sony". Sony is at its best when it has no choice but go for the standard.

 

It's not about audience in this case, I strongly doubt japanese fortnite players have any objection to level against cross play.

I think it's mostly that it'd probably drive people to PC because mouse keyboard is usually the way to go for those games and at some point they'll get tired of getting stomped..
