Hello! most my parts are around 5 years old and I've been looking to get a new GPU. However with everything being so old i'm not sure if i should just do that or upgrade the motherboard and CPU too. I think I'm good on memory and storage. I've also been looking around at monitors but i'm focusing on the PC.

1) buy new GPU(and monitor) ive been looking at a vega 64

2) upgrade motherboard and cpu( id probably get a new threadripper)

3) build new

Any help is appreciated! here are my current specs:

monitors: a 23 inch 1080p samsung monitor and a  25 inch lg 21:9 2560X1080p IPS panel

UserBenchmarks: Game 42%, Desk 55%, Work 40%

Basically you cpu has atom cores for cores and as we all know atom cores are incredibly weak so anything higher than what you have now is probably going to be a significant bottleneck, that is an objective statement period. Your case and monitors and ssds/hdds all that good stuff is fine just a get a new motherboard with a new processor and a new gpu. If you want help regarding a new cpu and gpu don’t start a new forum just tell me your budget and I’ll be more than happy to help unless you know a better option and just want to get a prebuilt if thats your thing or whatever.

My current code projects

--------------------------------

  • C#/OpenGL ( using OpenTK graphics library API ) KnightsRealm ( unfinished, WIP plan on releasing on steam maybe a mobile port idk ) 2d topdown pixel art based game with medieval themes, sorcery, dragons, open world
  • C++ crypter ( if your into cryptography, I plan on releasing this on my website later :P
  • C#/OpenGL ( OpenGL for UI ) fan/light controller for my room w/ raspberry pi and some mechanical motors and stuff :D

Current repair projects

------------------------------

  • My dreadful receiver ( a capacitor blew )
  • working on a PC from a client, CPU died within the system, seems like a short, replaced CPU and awaiting payment before I ship it back
  • my old 1tb sas drive for my NAS, some blemishes or something on the PCB need to clear that back out, if it doesn't work i'll need to scrap it ( already backed up all my stuff thankfully )

If you want any software made, or stuff to be repaired give me an email!

You're going to want to get both a new CPU/Motherboard/RAM and a new GPU. With your current system, you can't upgrade one without being severely bottlenecked by the other - It would be a waste.

In a new build, you can reuse your hard drives, monitors and potentially power supply if it is at least pretty good quality and a high enough wattage for the upgrade.

Desktop - CPU: Ryzen 7 3700x | COOLER: be quiet! Dark Rock 3 | MOBO: ASRock X370 Killer SLI/ac | RAM: 32GB Corsair Vengeance LPX 3200MHz | GPU: MSI RTX 2070 Super Gaming X Trio | STORAGE: 2x XPG SX8200 Pro 1TB, Crucial MX300 525gb, Seagate Barracuda Pro 4TB | CASE: Phanteks P400s TG White | PSU: Corsair HX750i

Laptop - Dell XPS 13 | Intel i7 7500u | Intel HD 620 Graphics | 8GB RAM | 256GB M.2 SSD

Peripherals - KEYBOARD: KBD67 Lite w/Gateron Milky Yellow Pros | MOUSE: Razer Deathadder V2 | AUDIO: Sennheiser HD 6XX, Truthear Hexa | MONITOR: Dual 1440p 27" MSI Optix MAG274QRF-QD

So if i'm understanding, if i get a new motherboard, i will need new ram? I know i need it since I'm still using DDR 3, just curious.

Id like to keep my budget around $1000USD but money is a little tight right now. Would upgrading my GPU now and waiting 4-6 months for the cpu/mobo work? The 7970 still plays most games  on high/ultra at 2560X1080 except some new triple A titles.  (or are you saying that my cpu would bottleneck a new gpu?) I like AMD, BUT  I don't know anything about motherboards. Is optane worth going intel? not having a m.2 slot is my biggest problem with this board, besides the age.

Do you have any suggestions for ram?

edit- I have a 620w  power supply, should i upgrade that along with everything else?
