In addition to discovering exclusive iPhone XS details today, 9to5Mac can exclusively share the first look at the new Apple Watch Series 4. This is the new Apple Watch that we believe Apple will unveil at its special event announced earlier today.

 

The biggest change is the all-new edge-to-edge display. Apple has been rumored to be working on ~15% bigger displays for both sizes of Apple Watch — that rumor has been confirmed in the images we’ve discovered. As expected, Apple has achieved this by dramatically reducing the bezel size around the watch display.

In addition to taking the display edge-to-edge, we’re also looking at a brand new watch face capable of showing way more information than the current faces offered. The analog watch face shows a total of eight complications around the time and within the clock hands. While we haven’t seen a new digital face yet, it’s likely that Apple has designed more new watch faces to take advantage of the larger display.

Also seen in the image is a new hole between the side button and Digital Crown, likely an additional microphone, and compatibility with what appears to be current watch bands. Both the Digital Crown and side button appear modified from the current Apple Watch models as well.

Just as I thought smartwatches were kinda dead/stagnated.

Still not for me though, since I don't really have a use for them.

Realistically, there is no use for them beyond fitness.

Still wearing a moto 360 and don't regret it. Does everything I want from a smart watch and nothing more.

I wonder what the battery life is like on it considering the larger screen. Never got to play with the earlier versions so nothing to base off of.

To me, though, this looks identical to the Series 3 watch. I don't see any difference in screen size.

If I have a phone then I don't need a watch at all, not even to tell the time. But then when I'm sitting in class, in a meeting, or walking down the hall, I have to pull my phone out and check. It's not much slower, but it's obnoxious. If there other things in my pocket and my tablet-sized phone is at the bottom, stuff is gonna fly out of my pocket and next thing I know my day is ruined.

 

But it's nice to have the extra fitness apps on top of ease of access. If I receive a text, "Siri read my texts." "Would you like to respond?" "Yes, bla bla bla."

I could see it being useful for a businessman or something, someone who gets called all the time. But for someone like me who rarely gets calls or texts, it wouldn't be worth the hassle of charging it everyday and wearing it. Not to mention the probably expensive pricetag.

The Apple Watch brand is the most egregiously expensive product Apple makes. I can buy an iPad for $600 AUD and the new Apple Watches will be closer to $450-550 AUD. So overpriced for the hardware you actually get.

For a businessman an automatic watch is more sensible. It's timeless, more beautiful usually, it's value won't drop after 5 years, and you can tell the time anywhere and anytime without having to worry about anything. And you can have actually useful complications that will never die on you even after a 10 hours flight!

I'd disagree, and my Apple Watch is part of my workflow.

 

I get several dozen work-related emails per day, and naturally I'm not always at my desk when I get them.  My watch lets me know whether I should bother pulling out my phone (or retreating to my desk), and I can archive the ones I don't care about.  Each message may only be a little hassle, but this could save a lot of time.

 

The Apple Watch has more useful complications -- full stop.  Automatic watches tend to have one or two complications, and it's usually limited to something like an extra time zone, the date, a chronograph or the moon phase.  My watch tells me all of these plus the weather, my upcoming calendar appointments, details from umpteen apps... basically, it's keeping me up to date on my life, not just whether or not it's nighttime in Tokyo.

 

I won't deny that automatic watches can look nicer, keep their value for longer and don't have batteries to worry about.  It's just that you're assuming a smartwatch has to cling to tradition to be good, and it absolutely doesn't.  I don't need to hand down a watch to a future grandchild -- I do, however, value keeping on top of my day without reaching into my pocket every five minutes.

As a teacher, I can say that it is very helpful to me. 

I have the administration at my school set to “VIP” so that emails from them get pushed straight to my watch. I can’t be on my phone because I need to be focused on my students, but my watch lets me see when important emails are sent and lets me tend to them if need be.

 

The fitness tracking is also a nice feature I use daily.

The Series 4 is expected to be much thinner than the series 3. Something that has been needed for some time I think!

If it was thinner and round I would honestly consider getting one even though I only recently (6 months ago~) got a series 3. Square, thick, and the lack of MST support are the biggest pitfalls of the Apple Watch.

Agree. Its really only good for heartrate, NFC payments and quick work email notifications. A lot of people try to justify it but mine still hasn't seen more than a week of use. 

 

Its not faster to do anything on a watch.

As much as I'd love to see MST support, it's probably never going to happen (or it'll happen in an unreasonable length of time)

I don't expect it to happen sadly (even Samsung moved away from it with the Sport/Galaxy Watch) -- although it's still very necessary as many places still don't accept NFC payments, or only accept their own ____-Pay. Meaning you, as an end user, get to sit there tapping in futility in the hopes that this retailer supports it.

it's not as nice as my breil, bulgari or rolex, but for the price, it's a decent everyday watch i have to say. No longer need to take one of the previous three to have it's glass replaced or band restored as often as i used to.
