NH-C14S/Dark Rock TF on 8086K

My build is nearly complete, but the matter of cases and cooling remains. I decided a while back that I want to go with a wider case than my S340 Elite for the 8086K build. I'm also looking at going to a top-down cooler. That's partly because I want to get some air blowing across the VRMs, and mostly because I just think top-down coolers look better than big towers. The NH-C14S is, imo, the best option for that, with the Dark Rock TF a close second (clearance issues bug me with the TF).

Relative to the H5 Ultimate I have now, what kind of performance could I reasonably expect from the C14S? I'm having the same problem with C14S benchmarks that I did with Dark Rock TF benchmarks--they're all over the map. Some reviews say both are good, some say they're quiet but not great, and one just completely trashes the Dark Rock TF as just this side of a train wreck. Anyone out there using either of these coolers on an unlocked CPU?

I enjoy buying junk and sinking more money than it's worth into it to make it less junk.

Don't bother with a down ward facing cooler. Stick a fan over the VRM if it starts to get hot.

You're going to delid the 8086K right?

Just grab one of the Noctua Dual Towers or a massive Thermalright cooler.

I wonder how you can put fans below those big CPU cooler heatsinks yet above the VRM heatsink?

by just shoving any old 92mm fan on it since it'll probably fit?

No delid. I'm not after a massive overclock. 5GHz would be spectacular, but I've done so little research into it at this point that I have no idea what's realistic. A lot of it is just for aesthetics. The downdraft air over the VRMs on my AsRock Fatality K6 will be nice, but I really do just prefer the look of top-down coolers to that of huge towers. The flip side of that, of course, is that I need to look at a wider or cube case.

then there's no point in buying an 8086K if you aren't shooting for 5.3ghz.

Why not just wait for the i9 9900K if you already have a Ryzen system? At least it will be soldered.

Thermaltake makes the best more modern cube/horizonal cases.

Did you win it in some kind of giveaway?

I did, in fact. You'd never know it because I'm actually keeping the damn thing instead of selling it off or trading it for a Threadripper.

that's the problem, it doesnt fit above the VRM heatsink to the left of the CPU socket. Even if it does, it's so close to the bottom of the tower of fins, it doesnt get fresh air.

Then sell it and use the money for a soldered 8 core i9 9900K?

Or get it delidded and do real overclocking on it. Or delidding will just drop your noise by a lot.

That board probably doesn't even need active VRM cooling, especially without real overclocking.

They should perform similar or slightly worse in the S340 Elite compared to the H5 Ultimate.

How about something like, for example, a Corsair Air 540? Would the added depth of that case favor the C14S/DRTF?

The added depth should help a bit but so does having fans in a system face the same direction. The 3 coolers perform similarly so it's hard to tell for sure which would perform better.
