So, this is rare, I have had problems with graphics drivers on Linux in the past but none I have been unable to google the answer for.

I wanted to dust off my spare PC to give the new steam play a go and cannot get the nvidia drivers to install. I have tried many suggestions with clean installs between, none have proved successful

Things I have tried:

I'm thinking that it is this bug: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/nvidia-graphics-drivers-390/+bug/1752053 but the 396 version has not fixed this?

spare machine specs:

i7 4790k

980ti flashed to evga bios

asus impact vii z97

uefi boot on sata m.2 card (samsung PM871)

Any suggestions welcome.

That is really strange, so with nouveau it doesn't have problems, but when you try the Nvidia ones it does not boot at all?

You will need to give us some kernel logs, there will surely be something fishy
