This topic would tie into both Graphics Cards and CPUs, Motherboards, and Memory

So at the bottom of the text, I will upload my current rig, and what I'm wondering is What should I upgrade... My current options and possibilities would be:

  • To upgrade and change my CPU, Motherboard, and RAM with shiny new parts like an i7 8700k, 16 gigs of DDR4 RAM, etc etc... (currently own an i7 4770 [non-overclockable], and 16 gigs DDR3).
  • The other option would be to purchase either a new RTX 2080 or 2070 and switch out my old card (currently own an MSI GTX1070 GamingX)

Some lurking variables to this would be that I'm a VR player so I really need the power from either upgrade, I play many video games and I love to squeeze out the beauty from most of them, and I own a 144Hz 1440p monitor and don't plan on going for 4k just yet because of the price of the 144Hz 4K Gaming Monitor...

I would appreciate any and all opinions... Thanks,

Well in terms of actual performance I'm pretty certain the biggest impact would be graphics card, especially if you got a 2080. Also wouldn't be a bad idea to sell the 1070 and put the cash towards the 2070/2080.

For me personally I'd choose the GPU all day long. Don't think the CPU will make anywhere near as much of an impact as the GPU would.

If you could do both that'd be great, but one in the future. I'd choose GPU first, then maybe in 4-5 months i'd upgrade the rest of your system with the 9th Gen CPUs, especially with Cyberpunk 2077 coming ;)

I'm hard pressed to recommend any upgrades to the new RTX cards until I see any benchmarks. So, if you're itching to upgrade something, I'd suggest going the way of the CPU/RAM/etc.

That's not to say the RTX cards will be BAD, I"m just skeptical of the performance increase outside of ray tracing, so I won't recommend them until  I see good performance numbers.

This would probably fall under new builds and planning

I WILL find your ITX build thread, and I WILL recommend the SIlverstone Sugo SG13B

Yea exactly I'm talking about two months or so into the future when the cards are out, and there are benchmarks out for them to see really what's new and what's worth what. For now, I was just curious on thinking what other's would think at the current state and what would give me a greater impact... for sure giving it some time though thanks

This is similar to what I thought would be best, gonna give some time for the benchmarks to come up, I'm usually not the one that'd jump onto a bandwagon without seeing some evidence to it's worth first...

Those 9th gen CPUs are looking very interesting must be on a lookout for info.

Given how weak the old cpu is, I’d upgrade the everything else first. Get a card later.

Id much rather play without studder from cpu than get a stronger gpu and still have issues.
