I want to build something that will out compete my friends PC

Go to solution Solved by brob,

If the measure for "beating" is gaming performance, the current rig does that. Otherwise either of the following upgrades will win out in single core performance while the 2600 will outperform in heavily multithreaded benchmarks.

AMD option:

PCPartPicker part list / Price breakdown by merchant

CPU: AMD - Ryzen 5 2600 3.4GHz 6-Core Processor  ($165.99 @ Amazon)
Motherboard: ASRock - B450 Pro4 ATX AM4 Motherboard  ($87.00 @ Amazon)
Memory: Corsair - Vengeance LPX 8GB (2 x 4GB) DDR4-3200 Memory  ($97.29 @ Newegg)
Total: $350.28

Intel option:

CPU: Intel - Core i5-8400 2.8GHz 6-Core Processor  ($180.54 @ Amazon)
Motherboard: ASRock - H370 Pro4 ATX LGA1151 Motherboard  ($89.99 @ SuperBiiz)
Memory: Corsair - Vengeance LPX 8GB (2 x 4GB) DDR4-3200 Memory  ($97.29 @ Newegg)

I basically want to have a better performance wise PC than my friends PC, however trying to beat an amd ryzen 5 1600 with the ROG STRIX z370-f is a bit difficult if i want to spend less and still get better performance per dollar.  https://pcpartpicker.com/b/kwCbt6 - (his setup)

I'm thinking an RGB intel build with plans for one 4k monitor and one 1080p monitor, with the PC being used for FPS, rpg, open world, yknow those types of games and normal school work.

My PC currently stands at $1,040 with these specs:

Intel core i5 4670 with intel stock color

8gb 1600mhz (4gb x 2)

Corsair CX650M

Asus Z87-k  motherboard

2 Corsair HD 120 LED RGB Fans

3 Thermaltake riing 12 series red LED fans

Gigabyte Windforce GTX 1060 3GB

Corsair Carbide SPEC Omega RGB

Corsair fan controller

Corsair K55 RGB Mechanical Keyboard

HP Wireless mouse

Insignia bluetooth 4.0  usb dongle

21.5 Inch 1080p monitor

Insignia 40 hour bluetooth speaker

120GB Sandisk SSD

512GB Sandisk SSD

500GB Western Digital 5400RPM Hard drive

I have $500 USD but really want to limit it to $300

Just get a used 4790k and a 1070 and you've got better performance than him for like $500.

that sounds like it would be really in my reach actually since i found a used 1070 for $300 and i can sell my gtx 1060 for $288 or $280

then just buy the processor with money from the 4670 and with what i have

He just wants to updgrade his current PC to outperform his friend's.

Other than CPU and GPU, everything else is fine.

hell, if you bid up to 150$ on this https://www.ebay.com/itm/Intel-Core-i7-4790K-4-0GHz-Quad-Core-Processor/283125196200?epid=197284894&hash=item41eb93a5a8:g:RygAAOSwxyJbgykw

sell your current cpu for 30-50$,

Buy a Dark rock pro, or cryorig r1 ult or noctua d14 or clc 240

overclocked it to 5.0

sold your 1060 for 200$,

you could probably buy one of these

you don't need fast ram for intel, ddr4-2400 or 2666 will do fine.

Not entirely accurate. Check out the data in https://www.techpowerup.com/reviews/Intel/Core_i7_8700K_Coffee_Lake_Memory_Performance_Benchmark_Analysis/.

DDR4-2666 CL 14 is significantly better than anything slower in most cases.

yeah, you get 5 fps by jumping to ddr4-4000, which is 2x the price.

ddr4-2666 or 3000 is the sweet spot.

Wait, https://www.asrock.com/MB/Intel/H370 Pro4/index.asp in this case, what does supports ddr4 2666 mean? Is it the max support of the mobo for ram or nah? Just confused xD

Edit: Found out that b360 and h370 boards do not support higher ram speeds. So anything above 2666 won't be accepted. I guess? Xdd

Edit again: I didn't know anything so the board will just down clock the ram speeds to 2666 xD

There is no problem using memory with speed ratings above DDR4-2666 on B360 and H370 motherboard. The cpu will run the memory at a lower speed.
