I consume content (YouTube, movies) and do work on my computer far more than I game therefore I am selling my TN 25" 144Hz 1080p monitor and getting a 27" one, likely at 1440p, probably will be the Dell U2715H.

I guess my question is regarding scaling. Most content and movies I watch would be in 1080p I think, certainly on YouTube, would the picture quality actually be worse on a 1440p monitor than on a 1080p one? Would a 4k monitor be a better long term investment due to better scaling of 1080p content and then eventually most content will be in 4k? Only issue with that is that I only have a 1060 6gb.

So basically I know I want a higher resolution for light photo editing and general crispness of the picture, but is a 1440p worth it when content is mostly recorded at 1080p or 4k? Meaning better to get smaller 1080p IPS panel or stump up the money for a 4k monitor and save for a new GPU?
