Is Freesync compatible with NVIDIA cards?

I'm planning on buying a new monitor for my new l-shaped desk setup. I have an ASUS VG248 monitor, already, which is a nice monitor but doesn't have G-Sync or Freesync, and I want to use it for my streaming PC. Many of the new, affordable monitors that I looked at have AMD Freesync. Thing is, I have an NVIDIA GTX 1060 6GB. I'm wondering: is AMD Freesync compatible with NVIDIA graphics cards? I don't want to spend a lot of money on a monitor with NVIDIA G-Sync.

That's what really sucks. FreeSync is so much better cost wise because it doesn't require extra hardware, but AMD doesn't make high end cards that don't require a ton of power.

i doubt they come untill somewhere deep into 2019.

 

However, they WILL Be power hungry. R9 series was, RX seires + Vega is also.

But: It's always "stupid" to not optimize ;-) Undervolting + maybe downclocking, or undervolting + OVERclocking (mostly even that works to a certain extend).

 

Even Nvidias cards have a pretty bad Performance efficiency. my GTX 1080 MSI Gaming X (instead the Nvidia standard, 180w, it has a factory OC and a bigger Bios, it draws up to 210-220w out of the box at 1961-1976 Mhz~.)

I have optimized it, Undervolted it from 1.043v down to 0.900v, same Clock speed, and a +500 Mhz Memory OC. Power consumption went down to 180w~, temperatures by 5°C.

 

On Vega for example, it's similar. Instead of consuming 300-320w on a Vega 64 Custom, you can optimize Voltage, Clock speeds, and PowerTarget so that you could get a simliar performance with only 230-250w power consumption, or even less.

 

 

Btw, if you go 2560x1440 + 144 Hz + G-sync/freesync.... G-Sync often only costs 70-100 bucks more. That's not really that much more tbh.

Just do the math: You might save 100 bucks by getting Freesync instead G-Sync. Sounds great.

But the AMD GPU might consume 100w more than the Nvidia counterpart. Now, you maybe play 2-3 hours a day.. Calculate how much more you pay your electricity bill per Year, if it's just 2 hours per day.

If we calculate 0.28€ per kWh (Germany), that will be 20,37€ per Year ( 1,57€ per 4 Weeks). 101€ per 5 Years. And at that point, your saving is Zero. After that, you save money by getting nvidia + g-Sync.

 

You just need to guess, how long your Monitor will be used. Usually, 8-10 Years usage for a Monitor is very realistic, it's rare for them to break before that. Can happen after 1 year, can happen after 15.

 

If you game 4 hours a day, that will also go up.

 

This calculation is just based on the Fact, that the Freesync + AMD Combination will consume 100 Watt more than the Nvidia + G-Sync combination. Also, considering that future AMD vs. Nvidia generations will also have a 100w~ difference.

 

i'm not saying you should spend 400 bucks for a G-Sync monitor (Dell S2417dg is a VERY good one. 1440p, 144 Hz with OC up to 165, quite a good Panel, G-Sync, usually below 400 US Dollar), instead of 200 for a Freesync model with 1080p resolution. But you shouldn't just blindly compare the Monitor prices alone, but instead also think about the Powerconsumption of different GPUs calculated over all the Years.

 

TL;DR: What you save with Freesync over G-Sync, you might just pay via a higher Power consumption, and int he end, it will often come out as +- 0$ saved.

 

 

 

In general tho: 144 Hz Monitors without G-Sync/Freesync used, will always have a much smaller tearing/stuttering than 60 Hz Monitors. You can perfectly fine use a Freesync 144 Hz Model with your nvidia card, no problem. You can make it work just fine.

 

When you should really really go for Freesync or G-Sync: When you personally are really sensitive for Screentearing (V-Sync OFF), or Microstuttering (V-Sync ON, but fps < Hz), and this bothers you and your Game experience. Your only options to get smooth motions will be:

- V-Sync ON (of stuff like Fast Sync) and more than 144 fps --> clean 144 fps at 144 Hz, clean 6,94 ms per Frame (Problem: It will be difficult to hit 144 fps in many modern games in general)

- G-Sync or Freesync. (doesn't matter how much fps. in 45 fps it will be smooth, in 120 fps it will be smooth. Just smoother. No stuttering/tearing)
