Gtx 1080ti vs RTX 2080ti @ 3440x1440 100hz

Holmes2468

I'm currently using a GTX 1080 at a 3440x1440 @100 refresh. I like a little of bells and whistles turned on but my frame rates in games like GTA V, Farcry, Home front and Just Cause 3 is at a constant 42 to 57fps.

I would like to get my refresh closer or past 60 fps. I had thought about pre ordering a RTX 2080ti FE and I had debated on just getting a 1080ti. What would be the best bang for the buck? I like the idea of Ray tracing and most likely the 2080ti will be a improvement over the 1080ti.

Definitely spend $1200 on the 2080Ti pre-order.  Totally a good idea.

FYI, the 1080Ti will do it for half the price.

The 1080ti cannot Ray Trace.

But in all seriousness. I don't want to buy the 1080ti from Newegg and run into the same issue that I'm having with the 1080.

No games Ray Trace either.

Bottom line is you bought the wrong video card and monitor setup, and now you're stuck. I'd sell the 1080, get a 1080Ti and enjoy it for years.  Ray Tracing LOWERED FPS in the Nvidia demo.   The 2000 series cards CAN ray trace but it'll take a few iterations to get them to where they're ray tracing at 4k/120+ like they want us thinking they can.

How about lower the settings a bit more and achieve the fps you want?

Because honestly with a GTX 1080 you should keep saving to invest on next years 7nm GPUs when Ray Tracing deal is actually starting to mature up and becoming actually relevant.

As it is right now the RTX 2080 Ti can't even do 1080p60fps with full Ray Tracing enable, not worth the premium asking price specially when we're getting a much more meaningful upgrade next year.

What monitor do you have? my Pixio is also 3440x1440 100Hz and with my former EVGA SC2 Hybrid 1080 Ti and iCX 1080 Ti both were able to get 100+ FPS on Ultra w/ GTA V.  4K cut that in half.  Again no benchmarks but it has been reported that the GTX 2080 Ti will be able to do some* games at 4K ultra settings at 100+ FPS.  With that being said a GTX 1080 Ti will be great at 1440P ultra settings and a 2080 Ti could be amazing if not borderline overkill.  If you plan on doing 4K or in the future the 1080 Ti will be ok to  even good in some games while the RTX has the potential to be very good to even great at 4K

money wise yeah 1080 Ti is just the safer bet, but if $1200 aint nothing but a thang, ball baby

That's really a personal choice . Personally I really like the evga card and it's cheaper which is nice . But I don't think you can go too far wrong with either of those cards

FTW has a far better cooler. I would take that over the SC2 depending on the price jump (if it is ~$20-45 more, take the FTW3).

I'm looking at the tree types of EVGA coolers. there are two types of FTW3 and a SC 2. The $670 SC2 and the $800 FTW3 both have similar clock speeds. The Cheaper $650 FTW3 are a lower Clock speed whem compared to the SC2. My only guess is the the cheaper FTW3 has a failed lottery chip in it.

Well I guaranty you the question will be asked several more times today.

Anyway, get the non-blower cheapest 1080 Ti with two or more fans.  You can easily overclock it.

Get the Cheaper FTW3 GPU and hopefully it can be overclocked up to 2ghz?

The 1080 is a decent card for 3440x, it's all in the fine tuning. Toy with the settings, turn off ambient occlusion, reduce ultra to high, and do whatever else. It WILL keep above 60 FPS in any of those games you listed, maybe something like The Evil Within 2 might tank it a little but that's about it. Don't blow $650 on a previous gen card, IMHO that's just a dumb move especially with your current card.

Then wait for the RTX GPUs and make the ultimate decision. A poor RTX tech demo attempt with unpolished drivers doesn't mean the cards are going to perform like shit.

2GHz is pretty extreme, but you should be able to get near it.

I decided to take advantage of the GTX 1080ti and get the next card when released.

Not a day and night difference, it's more for the last drop of performance you can get out of the card.

You're going to overclock it anyway.  They're all the same GPU, just with different coolers and mild factory overclocks.
