Hello guys,

Finally, I have managed enough funds and other resources to upgrade my Gaming PC.

It'll be my first platform upgrade since 2010.

As of now, my system stands.
AMD Phenom 2 1090T Black Ed
Gigabyte 970A-DS3P

10GB DDR3 1333Mhz RAM
Zotac GTX 1060 AMP Ed

Samsung 850 EVO 500GB

WD Blue x 2 (1TB + 500GB)

WD Black 1TB

Corsair CX650M - 650W PSU

I have gathered enough funds to upgrade to a newer platform motherboard, a new CPU and 16GB of RAM and a proper cooler if required.
Since I wouldn't be Upgrading the system anytime in the next 5 years, I need Suggestions for the CPU.

So far I was considering an Intel 8700K with a good Z370 motherboard and 16GB Trident Z, but Intel seems to be releasing the new 9 Series in October which feeds my confusion and hesitation to buy the current ones asap.

So here's the question I'd need help with, Should I buy an Intel 8700K now, or wait a month to buy a new 9700K?

Considering current gen has 6C-12T hyperthreading but 9700K will have 8C-8T, which would be most valuable for my use case.

My only requirements for the new system would be :-

  1. High fps(at least 200+fps, 400+ for CSGO) gaming for eSports titles(CSGO, PUBG, R6S, Overwatch etc), most of which I play at lower resolutions
  2. Being able to play AAA titles at stable 60FPS
  3. Be able to record/stream w/o affecting gaming performance
  4. Last me at least 5 years for the above tasks

I will be re-using parts from my current system as most of them are in working condition and I've been updating those every year or so. A graphics card update is possible in a year or so if my current one stops giving me optimal performance for my games(expect a 2060/2070/2160/2170 someday).

Thanks in Advance :)

I recommend waiting for perfomance benchmarks for the 9700K to get a concrete answer. Although, 8C/8T is tempting compared to 6C/12T. Rumor has it that they're using solder this time around so temperatures are bound to be better, I can only imagine.

i would actually get a 2600X or 2700X as intel cpus are overpriced, a 2600X is cheaper than a 8600k and comes with a half-decent stock cooler.

8700k, would be better.

Did consider 2700x and even Gen 1 TR.... but since I'll be gaming and streaming only, more cores would go wasted. Plus top tier i7 can actually stay well performing in games even after 4-5 years...

Since you play mostly CS:GO and other esport titles at low res and 200+ FPS I would go with the 8700K or upcoming 9700K over a 2700X. Especially for CS:GO as the Source engine build the game uses is known for having a bug in game logic code execution on Ryzen CPUs that adds a great deal of latency. thus resulting in much lower framerates (usually 180-250 on average).

The extra two real cores on the 9700K might outweigh the 6 cores and 12 threads on the 8700K though, however no benchmarks are out yet so anything about performance on the 9700K is pure speculation.

New Build (The Compromise): CPU - i7 9700K @ 5.1Ghz Mobo - ASRock Z390 Taichi | RAM - 16GB G.SKILL TridentZ RGB 3200CL14 @ 3466 14-14-14-30 1T | GPU - ASUS Strix GTX 1080 TI | Cooler - Corsair h100i Pro | SSDs - 500 GB 960 EVO + 500 GB 850 EVO + 1TB MX300 | Case - Coolermaster H500 | PSUEVGA 850 P2 | Monitor - LG 32GK850G-B 144hz 1440p | OSWindows 10 Pro.

Peripherals - Corsair K70 Lux RGB | Corsair Scimitar RGB | Audio-technica ATH M50X + Antlion Modmic 5 |

CPU/GPU history: Athlon 6000+/HD4850 > i7 2600k/GTX 580, R9 390, R9 Fury > i7 7700K/R9 Fury, 1080TI > Ryzen 1700/1080TI > i7 9700K/1080TI.

Other tech: Surface Pro 4 (i5/128GB), Lenovo Ideapad Y510P w/ Kali, OnePlus 6T (8G/128G), PS4 Slim.

Normally I'd say just buy what's available when you're ready to upgrade, but the potential changes for the 9700K are worth a wait and see, between possible soldered TIM to potential performance gains from a true 8 core CPU, those benchmarks and thermal tests may prove the 9700K to be a very worthy upgrade compared to the 8700K.
